It’s not always easy to find a florist that fits your personal style. But if you’re looking for a florist who can provide arrangements with a bit of whimsy, look no further than A Garden of Earthly Delights.
Based in Baltimore with a second location in Sante Fe, NM, owner Carole Langrall said A Garden of Earthly Delights represents her intuition for floral design.
“I wanted a name that represented my design sensibilities: something garden oriented, whimsical, magical and thought provoking,” she said. “The Dutch artist, Hieronymus Bosch, just happened to create that perfect name first, so I borrowed it based on his famous triptych, Garden of Earthly Delights.”
It’s all about the design …
Operating since 1996, Langrall said the floral design studio prides itself on staying green and providing clients with a comfortable studio environment.
“I started in 1996 with very little money. My design objective was to incorporate garden grown elements into sophisticated, high end arrangements,” she said. “I was ‘green’ before the green movement began. My goal with clients was to by-pass the typical retail style setting of most florist shops and create a warm studio environment where people could come, relax and discuss beautiful flowers over a cup of tea.”
Langrall said in the busy summer months, she often gets request from brides to incorporate Calla lilies, hydrangeas and orchids into arrangements, but there isn’t a flower she doesn’t love to use. She said for brides looking to save a few bucks, they should request locally grown, seasonally flowers and she can also create floral hair pieces for brides that are artistic and unique.
It’s all about the cost …
The cost of bouquets and floral arrangements for weddings vary greatly, but Langrall said she has done weddings for as little as $1,000 all the way up to $50,000. Though she said with the current economic climate, most wedding budgets she is seeing are between $2,000 and $3,000.
She said a 50 percent deposit is required to book The Garden of Earthly Delights for your big day with the remaining balance due two weeks prior to the event.
Langrall recommends brides set up a complimentary consultation with her to review their options and they should be ready to discuss any ideas they have and colors they’re interested in.
When deciding on a florist for your wedding, Langrall said it’s important for brides to recognize that the florist is the expert.
“Make sure you feel comfortable with your florist and trust her/him to take your ideas and interpret them into their own designs, she said. “The most important thing for a bride is to not try and control the process, to let her florist do their job and remember flowers are fragile, substitutions may be needed, life happens but the process should be fun and never scary!”
Brides have an abundance of options to choose from in the Baltimore area, but Langrall said A Garden of Earthly Delight’s commitment to nature makes them stand out above the rest.
“We are naturalists first, designers second,” she said. “The wedding flower trends we follow are set by Mother Nature herself. My studio was the first in Maryland to incorporate locally grown, native flowers and plant matter (including seeds) into designs. We believe in minimizing the reliance on foreign grown product and fuel, advocating instead the use of local floriculture within our own state and country.”
