“I think my style is unique in that I kind of hear it rather than being classically trained or following a set of rules,” said Orlando musician Jonnie Morgan, lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist with the Jonnie Morgan Band. “I have soft love songs but can switch it up to bring a deeper, harder hitting sound with more vocal grittiness.”
Morgan’s influences span a wide range from the classic rock of Led Zeppelin, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Doobie Brothers, and Eric Clapton to more current bands such as Blink 182, Sum 41, Dave Matthews, O.A.R, and Sublime, “Also, always dug Bob Marley’s message and lyrical style.”
The singer/songwriter/guitarist has his own formula for song writing, “I usually come up with a riff on the guitar and then lyrics sort of flow out. A lot of the time it’s built upon emotion and what I may be feeling that day or week.”
About his Orlando based band he says, “We have a very eclectic sound. I think it’s mostly because we all have very different musical backgrounds and interests which somehow blend. It’s not as easy as it sounds, but there’s a lot of chemistry in the band, which is hard to see in a lot of groups.”
“As long as we’re bringing enjoyment to our fans, that’s all we care about. We’re going to keep making music and having kick ass live shows. We love being on stage together playing for people, there’s absolutely no better feeling.”
Morgan’s thoughts about the Orlando music scene are echoed by many musicians based here. “I think that it’s great. There’s a lot of good people and good things going on around Orlando that are putting it on the map. Sean Perry and Rick Wheeler do a great job with putting on things like Orange Avenue Jam and Florida Music Festival and we’ve been very blessed to play in both. It’s just going to keep getting bigger and better every year and we’re honored enough to say that we’ve been a part of it.”
The Jonnie Morgan Band has an EP release show scheduled September 30th in Orlando at The BackBooth for Reflections In The Water. Music fans can check out the band on their official site, Twitter, and Facebook pages.
