The emotions of a Jedi Knight must always be under control. In the case of Qui-Gon Jinn’s young Padawan Xanatos keeping his emotions under control has been an ordeal. Returning to his home planet of Telos IV has been a trial for Xanatos in many ways and in Star Wars: Jedi – The Dark Side #4 from Dark Horse Comics written by Scott Allie with art by Mahmud Asrar, Xanatos’ emotions are steering him away from the true purpose of the Jedi mission on Telos IV.
Picking up the pieces from an insurgent attack that led to the death of Nason daughter of Crion leader of Telos IV, Qui-Gon Jinn continues his work to avoid a costly civil war. Xanatos wants to be with his father Crion to protect him and to make up for not being able to protect Nason. With feelings of failure and not living up to his father’s ideals Xanatos’ decisions have come into question. These feelings are keeping Xanatos from seeing the truth about the growing conflict on Telos IV. But will it be too late for Qui-Gon to save the day and avoid more disaster?
Seeds planted by Allie over the course of the first three issues of the Star Wars: Jedi-The Dark Side series are starting to bloom. Allie adds drama to the story by revealing alliances between characters who have until this point been antagonists working against one another.
The characters portrayed by Allie in the narrative are strong. Qui-Gon Jinn is the stoic but caring Jedi Master who wants the best for his young apprentice. Xanatos has been whiney, outspoken and surly. His actions are not those of a Jedi. The other characters are so believable in their depiction that when their true allegiances are revealed their actions feel right in the overall story arc.
Artist Asrar’s artwork offers varying levels on intricacy. Asrar depicts the action scenes with enough power and energy to see Qui-Gon fly into action swinging his lightsaber with grace and control. Asrar also is able to add weight to the quieter moments that establish the scenes. A lot of this issues’ action takes place at nighttime and the quiet atmosphere is established through Asrar’s art.
The decision: The story of Qui-Gon Jinn and his apprentice, Xanatos, has moved along at a rapid pace. While confronting an army of insurgents whose ultimate goals have yet to be revealed the Jedi are dealing with threats not only to their lives but their belief system. Emotions are running high but will the Jedi be able to get control of them in time? Allie and Asrar work well together to make this a must read adventure from the Star Wars universe.
