This year marks the University of Northern Virginia’s (UNV) tenth anniversary, but anything but a celebration is taking place at this University. Immigration and Customs Enforcement says it has warned UNV of being endangered of losing the ability to enroll foreign students.
On Thursday, July 28, 2011, dozens of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents raided two suites located in the Annandale Campus taking boxes of papers and computer hardware. A sign now reads on the door offices that they currently will not be able to enroll foreign students.
It is said that the University is an “unaccredited, for-profit private University,” however the schools website claims that they offer accredited American-style educational programs at the undergraduate, master and doctoral levels. Their website also claims that they are accredited by the American University Accreditation Council (AUAC). The school was formerly accredited by the Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools, but this accreditation was revoked for unspecified reasons on August2008 and has a certificate to operate by State Council of Higher Education for Virginia (SCHEV) as a non-accredited institution
The school has locations in Annandale, Manassas, and Centreville, Virginia. They also have locations internationally in, Hong Kong China, Prague Czech Republic and London England however they call themselves the most popular American University for students from India which seems quite evident when you go to their website and see their UNVA success story of a woman from Bombay India.
Now UNVA non- immigrant students must leave the country immediately if they are unable maintain their active status in accordance to federal government regulations. Officials from ICE’s Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) have also given notice of intent to withdraw.
is sad for those parents that sent their children to schools to reach their goals and dreams. This University has taken their money but this is a lesson learned for everyone doing business overseas. It is important to do your research, especially when investing in your child’s or your own education.
Currently this schools reputation is in the dump. According to the March 2011 article in The Chronicle of Higher Education, UNVA’s enrollment practices and business model is comparable to Tri-Valley University in California which was forced to close due to an investigation for immigrant visa fraud.
