I have loved Hydrive from the moment I found out about them stuck in a cooler in Washington DC. Since that point, they have really blossomed – coming out with everything from chews to new looks and branching nationwide. It could not make me happier.
I really enjoyed Hydrive’s energy line, and could not be happier when they asked me to review their latest drink – an extra caffeinated variety. For years, the one thing I wished was for Hydrive to really make a version for us caffeine fiends out there. It seems I was not the only one with the idea. Hydrive extra strength is also is a delicious Black cherry flavor, and like usual they do everything right.
This time round, Hydrive loses the letters they usually put on the front of their bottles, like Hydrive’s C, E, S, V deciding not to name this one X or any other silly acronyms. I really enjoyed the new style – even if it is a departure from the other drinks. They used a nice black and yellow with red accents that really helps sell the “EXTRA” in this formula.
Functionally, they used their winning sealable “gripper” style of PET bottle formulated for Hydrive’s drinks. Their unique shape is completely proprietary and has a unique style. The label is dual labelled for easier placement on convenience store shelves. Most importantly, they list caffeine and other nutrients clearly, which I appreciate. This is a real winner.
Like all the other Hydrive’s as well, this one is not carbonated. It actually tastes better that way – reminding me more of a Vitamin Water and, in this case, making the drink as mellow and easy to drink down. This is a black cherry flavor, and presents itself admirably. It reminds me more of a sugar free Kool Aid version on the flavor, but that is not a bad thing.Of the samples I was sent, one got downed warm on a hot day in about 5 seconds and cooled me down. The second I stuck in the freezer, and it made a fantastic Slush Puppie – icy and refreshing.
To sweeten the drink, they used a blend of sugar and sucralose – which gave the drink the right amount of tartness without being too syrupy or bitter. Also, the sucralose kept this down to only 30 calories per bottle – -which is pretty good.
The thing I wanted most from Hydrive is an extra strength formula to really get a person going. For a long time they have added other great formulas to their drinks, things to provide stamina and hydration after sports and so on. This time, they upped the most important thing to me – to 195mg caffeine – 50mg more than their other flavors.
Now 195mg of caffeine is not really that intense. Actually, that is just a measly 15mg more than a Monster or Red Bull. But what that does do is make Hydrive actually give you a regular energy drink’s amount of buzz. While this was certainly not over the top with energy, it did give me a nice normal 16 ounce energy drink’s boost.
What makes this really work then is the other stuff in here. Sure, it has all the regular gang of energy ingredients, including a megadose of Vitamin B, taurine, l-arganine and l-carnitine. But what makes this special is all the sodium and potassium in here to help recover from a hard workout. Like Gatorade, drunk on a boring day inside playing video games and watching Hoarders makes for a tasty enough drink (well, Hydrive tastes light years better than Gatorade). The fun of these drinks is to slam them down after exerting your self for a couple hours. This stuff was made to be pounded when using physical energy – the difference between drinking this down after a hard day of yard work and a glass of water is remarkable.
While the Xtra caffeinated version of Hydrive is not really that Extra, it is still my new favorite of their impressive line.
