Hurricane Irene kills 7, shuts down NY airports (photos, video)
New York, NY — World travelers in San Francisco are learning this afternoon that there will be no outgoing or incoming flights on Sunday to any of the five NY-area airports.
KTVU Channel 2 News in San Francisco reports that flights operated by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey issued the statement. Hurricane Irene is the reason behind the closure of the airports on Sunday.
In San Francisco alone, KTVU Channel 2 News has said that over forty flights out of San Francisco International Airport to the northeast region of the U.S. were canceled on Saturday because of Hurricane Irene, according to an SFO airport spokesman.
The NY-area airports affected that world travelers should know about are John F. Kennedy, LaGuardia, Newark Liberty, Teterboro and Stewart, said a spokesman for the agency, Steve Coleman.
For world travelers, this means there are likely to be “thousands of flights cancelled, with 150 to 200 people a flight,” stated Coleman, saying that “probably tens of thousands of people” are going to be impacted.
World travelers should note that the airports in Philadelphia, Washington, New York and Boston will be suspending operations for some part of the weekend, says KTVU Channel 2 News.
Travelers heading from San Francisco to New York or the East Coast can find flights at www.kayak.com. Deals can be found when there are no natural disasters going on.
