Jefferson @ Milan Friday 7:00 pm: Milan won last season’s battle against Jefferson 7-0 in week 6. The Bears are coming off of a 41-27 win over Tecumseh while the Big Reds were handled by Ypsi 22-0. The all time series between these two school is tied at 8-8-1 but the Big Reds have won the last four games.
Jefferson was impressive on offense last week by putting up 41 points and rolling up a boatload of yardage on the ground. Look for more of the same from the run happy Bears this week in what appears to be a low scoring game.
Defensively, the Bears struggled to stop the rebuilding Indians and may have problems stopping Milan’s new diversified offense.
Milan was shut out at home for the first time in years against Ypsilanti. Milan will most likely struggle to put up points against the Bear defense.
Milan had a hard time in the first half last week with Ypsi’s offensive speed. Look for Milan’s defense to be more physical this week with the Bear running game.
The logical pick here would be to go with the seasoned veteran coach at Jefferson over the winless first year coach at Milan. This appears to be a pick’em game but home field has to mean something. Pick: Milan 14 Jefferson 13
Riverview @ Airport Friday 7:00 pm: The Pirates dominated the Jets last season 34-6 and own the all-time series lead 18-13. Riverview is coming off of a 41-0 thrashing of Crestwood while Airport was handled by Bedford 35-7.
Riverview was impressive on the ground against Crestwood last week by rolling up 226 rushing yards but the Pirates are by no means a one dimensional offensive team. Matt Gibbons is a capable QB and has two very athletic receivers to throw the ball to.
Defense has always been Jeff Stargalas’s point of emphasis and this season is no different. Brock Salser may be the best defensive player in the league.
Airport has a versatile offense that is led by junior QB Brandon Potcova. The Jets moved the ball last week against Bedford and should be able to move the ball on the Pirates.
Defensively, the Jets are athletic on defense and Riverview does not have the offense that Bedford boasts.
This should be a great game to watch this week. Airport is still smarting from last year’s drubbing at the hands of Riverview and revenge will be a factor. Pick: Airport 21 Riverview 14
