This Huntington Beach thrift store is a hidden gem indeed. Known as the Bargain Box, this shop is tucked off Slater and Beach in a stucco building that looks more like an old office complex than the nice-sized thrift store that it really is. The store offers a pleasant shopping experience, arranged nicely with color co-ordinated displays showcasing items that all look clean and in good condition. In addition, the workers there are friendly and helpful (after all they are volunteers whose motto at the Assistance League is “All for Service and Service for All”).
Bargain Box has a respectable collection of men’s clothing, jean, pants, suits, and shoes- at low prices (such as $3 for nice pants, $5 for jeans). There are some small electronics and a nice assortment of pillows, linens and housewares. Their wall artwork was an offering of art to fit most any style or taste, not to mention budget. The children’s section is large- with lots of colorful clothing, games and toys to check out. The ladies clothing section has categorized racks- sleeveless and short sleeved tops are $2.50, long-sleeved tops are $3 and so forth. A rack of ladies jackets ranged from $4-$6 dollars. There is a section of bridal dresses offered as well.
Bargain Box has a boutique section and there are vintage and retro items, plus a smattering of collectibles (a collectible Jim Beam decanter for $2, anyone?) There was for instance a lovely Nichols and Stone rocking chair on sale the day I was there. It was a maple Windsor style chair with the original stickers and markings on it- offered at $150. There was vintage china and an old Seth Thomas Clock offered for sale. I stumbled across a vintage St. John ladies jacket for $15. And a long-time quest of mine- to find some hematite magnetic jewelry pieces as a gift- was resolved. I found not one pretty hematite necklace, but two, at the awesome price of $4 a piece. What a gem of a place!
Bargain Box is located at 8071 Slater Avenue Suite 145 in Huntington Beach CA (714-847-6511). Their hours are 11am-3p daily except they are closed Thursdays and Sundays. Their website is huntingtonbeach.assistanceleague.org.
