With a hit song titled “#STUPiDFACEDD,” we were immediately drawn to the musician known as Wallpaper and had to check out his show Saturday August 6th at the Beauty Bar. Lately, his song has been receiving airplay at the end of the 4th season of the Jersey Shore and is quickly becoming one of the hottest hits of the summer, leading us to believe that Wallpaper is playing his cards right. Not only is he receiving props from MTV, he also recently released an EP titled “#STUPiDFACEDD” and has been on a month long tour to support his new album. His sound can’t be defined easily; it’s a strange amalgamation of dance grooves, hip-hop beats and experimental instruments, however, it melds together perfectly. Although this was our first time to see Wallpaper live, it was not his first time in Austin. He was here during South by Southwest, and is familiar with Barton Springs and Austin’s fried avocado taco’s, making him an honorary Austinite for the night.
The stage was dark and specks of light reflecting from the disco ball bounced off the faces of the crowd. As the lights abruptly switched on, Wallpaper took the stage with his standard fedora and sunglasses shielding his eyes. He immediately opened the set singing “Tonight I’m riding shotgun,” and with a drop of the bass, the song took off in full stride. Adding to the fullness of the song, Wallpaper was joined with two drummers tucked in the back of the stage, and a female vocalist lending her beautiful voice to the up tempo dance inspired songs. Although most might view Wallpaper as a rapper or hip-hop artists, his songs often showcased his diverse musical talent. As mentioned above, Wallpaper is currently on tour in support of his new EP and graciously played the songs “2 Pair Of Shades,” and “Okay” from the album. “Trouble” which had him toting an electric guitar was a highlight of the night and allowed the crowd to see the diverse talent of the artist. For the past 5 days of the tour, Wallpaper was the supporting act, however, for the show in Austin he took the reigns and was the headlining act. Showing his enthusiasm he was seen high fiving his band as well as the audience before going into the party anthem “T Rex.” As the set was coming to an end, Wallpaper expressed his love for fried avocado tacos and abruptly launched into the last song “#STUPiDFACEDD” immediately encouraging the crowd to throw up their hands and uncontrollably jump up in the air. By the end of the night it was apparent that his music definitely gets the crowd excited, ready to party and get “Stupidfacedd.”
Although the name Wallpaper might have you thinking of decorative paper that is pasted on the wall, it now has a new meaning for us: musician. Wallpaper genuinely puts on a great show and left us wondering why we had never sought out the artist in the past. If you are wondering where you can pick up some of his music, look no further than ITunes as they carry his new EP as well as past albums.
