Houston quarterback Case Keenum has been named to the 75th Annual Maxwell Award Watch list which goes to the nation’s best offensive player, the Maxwell Football Club and University of Houston announced on Tuesday.
Keenum will be on every watch list feasibly possible for a college football quarterback in 2011. Keenum could set a slew of NCAA passing records this season as he is closing in on the NCAA all-time records for total offense, passing yards and touchdowns thrown.
Keenum has made a home for himself on preseason watch lists for offensive awards.
In his career, Keenum has been named to eight All-America teams and has been a finalist for three national offensive awards including the prestigious Walter Camp Player of the Year Award. He was the 2009 Conference USA Most Valuable Player, the 2008 C-USA Offensive Player of the Year and the 2007 league Freshman of the Year. On top of the athletic awards, Keenum is a five-time Commissioner’s Honor Roll recipient.
In 2011 Keenum will again be the center of many watch lists and is considered a dark horse favorite by some for the Heisman Trophy. If he continues to perform at the levels he’s used to and Houston wins a lot of football games it will be hard to not justify him winning awards.
The Maxwell Award has been given to America ‘s outstanding collegiate football player since 1937 and is named in honor of sportswriter Robert W. “Tiny” Maxwell.
Semifinalists for the Maxwell Award will be announced Oct. 31 and the three finalists will be unveiled Nov. 21. The winner of the 2011 Maxwell Award will be announced as part of the Home Depot ESPNU College Football Awards Show held on Dec. 8. The formal presentation of the award will be made at the Maxwell Football Club Awards Gala hosted by Harrah’s Entertainment Atlantic City on March 2, 2012.
The watch list candidates have been chosen by the Maxwell Football Club’s selection committee, evaluating past performance and future potential. The Club reserves the right to make additions and deletions to these lists as the 2011 season unfolds. All members of the Maxwell Football Club, NCAA sports information directors, head coaches, and selected national media are eligible to vote for the awards.
