Hope Hines – his last sports broadcast was good for him, sad for his viewers who all wish him well in his retirement from News Channel 5 TV in Nashville.
He informed us. He entertained us. He made us laugh. Sometimes he almost made some of us come to tears. (That last part would be ‘the wife’, not me!) But Hope never failed to arrive, on schedule, on that television screen, right after the daily newscast. Some of us were only waiting around for the sports. We had to know who won, who lost and where our favorite teams were going next.
Having watched Hope Hines over the past 40 years, broadcasting from the newsroom at News Channel 5, or from the Vanderbilt Commodores Stadium, or from the Fairgrounds Speedway racetrack, or from the Belmont Athletics games, or from the Nashville Sounds compound at Greer Stadium,or from the Nashville Predators facility, or from the Tennessee Titans stadium, Hope has been all around the Nashville area. He has been a daily part of our lives, as we watched him change from a young man with black hair to a man of gray. And we watched the suit coats change, the ties change but we never saw Hope change. He remained the same, always smiling and always there to inform us of the sports news in the Nashville area.
On his last broadcast on News Channel 5 WTVF in Nashville, we saw the emotion as he shared with his rapt audience his feelings upon leaving the position he had held for over 40 years. We were saddened for ourselves to see him leave the air, but happy for him upon his retirement. He talked of writing a book with his sports memories perhaps to be done by next year.
We don’t look for Hope to travel far from his Nashville home. Even in retirement, there are many things to do in this area. Many friends to meet up with. Many activites to be involved in.
We wish Hope Hines well in his retirement, but you will certainly be missed, Hope!
