Yoki Koto Kiku is a parody of Seishi Yokomizo’s famous Japanese mystery novel Inugami Clan, by Koge Donbo. The patriarch of the Nekogami family passes away, leaving his estate to his eldest grandson, Sukehiko. However, he is fighting a war and nobody knows what happened to him. If he comes home, he’ll get the money; if not, then it will go to his fiancée, Tamayo. If Tamayo dies, then the estate will go to one of the triplets. The result: a hilarious last man standing war over who will get the inheritance.
The main problem of the manga is that the author only devotes one chapter to parodying the novel that it’s based on. It’s a real shame because the author could have gone all out on poking fun at the novel, gleefully satirizing the plot holes and other flaws the story has. That being said, the artwork is quirky and charming. The author is a decent writer and has a wonderful sense of humor. Despite the missed opportunities with the plot, it’s a decent story that Honolulu manga fans may enjoy.
