Theme cruises are hot. So is the subject of Vampires.
For as long as I can remember, there have been theme cruises: baseball cruises on MSC, country western music themed cruises on Carnival and murder mystery cruises on Royal Caribbean.
Now Holland America will try something new with the first vampire-theme voyage. Cruising on the coat tails of the wildly (and strangely) popular Twilight books and movie series, True Blood and Vampire Diaries cable TV series plus endless novels, Holland America brings the “undead” to Alaska’s icy inside passage.
The event, officially named, “Vamps at Sea,” has planned a full week of vampire genre to be held aboard Holland America’s Zuiderdam. All events will take place while the ship is at sea, so that everyone can step off the ship when in port and not miss any vampire-themed events. Linda Wolf, owner of Cruises, Cruises, Cruises Inc., creator of Vamps at Sea explains, “It just so happens that I am also a fan of vampire genre so I thought it would be great fun to have a vampire-themed cruise.”
Some of the exclusive activities are:
- Meet and greet with celebrity guests familiar with vampire lore
- Vampire Ball and cocktail party
- Vampire talent show
- Charity auction to benefit the American Red Cross
- Vampire-theme writing contest
- Vendor area for those must-have vampire souvenirs
Among the celebrity-lineup is the great grand-nephew of Bram Stoker, Dacre Stoker. Providing insight and commentary into the world of vampires, Mr. Stoker will also be promoting his new book, Dracula, the Un-Dead – the Sequel to the Original Classic.
Also onboard to add to the thrills and chills will be John Edgar Browning, a PhD Candidate and Arthur A. Schomburg Fellow in the Department of American Studies at SUNY in Buffalo. Browning, one of the world’s leading authorities in vampire lore, has done extensive research among residents of New Orleans who claim to be or have a connection to vampires.
Personally, this sounds like a fascinating theme cruise. Not that I am “into” the current vampire craze, but it would be an interesting study in human, or…”non-human” behavior.
At home somewhere in Transylvania
Last summer, I toured Bran Castle, the legendary home of Vlad the Impaler, aka Count Dracula. Whether or not this was the real “Dracula’s Castle” is a hotly debated subject in Transylvania, Romania. Many Transylvanians still hang ropes of garlic at their doorway hoping to ward off any untoward vampires, proving that vampires are more than simple folk lore to many believers.
The Zuiderdam sails round-trip from Vancouver on June 23, 2012 for a seven night Alaska Inside Passage cruise. Prices for the event begin at $1,060 per person based on double occupancy. There is an additional $150 event fee. The ports include Juneau, Skagway and Ketchikan. With four sea days on the itinerary, there will be ample time for all of the ghoulish events.
