After a long summer, GoHofstra.com’s Student-Athlete of the Week award is back.
Started last in the 2008-2009 school year, the award recognizes the weekly achievements of a student-athlete who rose above in competition. Baseball first baseman Jared Hammer was the reigning champion from the end of last semester.
Pride volleyball outside hitter Nikki Kinnier took home the first honor of the season. It was the first time in her Hofstra career that she was named Student-Athlete of the Week and the first volleyball player since Kylee Maneja in October 2010.
The sophomore led the Pride to two straight wins and a title victory at the Asics Invitational last weekend.
For her efforts, she was named the most valuable player of the tournament. Kinnier had match highs in kills for both matches, including 19 against Radford University in the first game and 21 against Manhattan College in the second game.
Additionally, Kinnier tallied 11 digs over the weekend, eight of which came in the championship match.
Hofstra if off to a 3-0 start after defeating Siena on Monday. This is the school’s best start since the 2007 season (5-0).
The Pride will host the Hofstra Invitational this upcoming weekend at the Mack Sports Complex. St. Francis of Brooklyn, Fairfield, Princeton and NJIT will make the trip to Hempstead for a two-day affair.
