Walk into your favorite boutique or department store in Maryland or Washington, DC (or throughout the world for that matter), chances are there is a lovely display of Hobo International bags, wristlets and wallets calling your name. Like choosing any fashion staple, selecting your next Hobo bag is an all too enjoyable experience. Envision fictitious New York fashion icon Carrie Bradshaw’s delight when surrounded by stilettos, pumps, boots or any gorgeous shoe she could slip onto her foot. Hold that thought – now envision you and your girlfriends perusing the latest fall collection of Hobo Bags with the same fervor. As you contemplate the size and color of your new bag, you notice the impeccable design and cannot help but take in the aroma of leather that screams, “Buy me now!!”
Ladies, get ready to be in Hobo heaven. The beautifully crafted Hobo International collections destined for prestigious retail venues in New York City, Paris, Tokyo and beyond will be featured in your own backyard at the flagship Hobo International store in downtown Annapolis. Set to open this fall, the first-ever Hobo International store will debut an array of signature Hobo pieces, including the brand new Fall 2011 collection. You and the girls can scan two levels of retail to find your perfect bag(s) for fall and the holidays and still have time to head to happy hour in downtown Annapolis.
The Hobo International Brand is Born
I had the pleasure of sitting down and chatting with local Annapolitan Koren Brewer, Hobo International’s Chief Visionary Officer who took over the company in 2006 with her husband David. Not only is Koren completely approachable and a font of knowledge on topics like fashion, trends and accessories…she also exudes a positive, welcoming energy that makes you feel as though you could chat for hours over wine and a deliciously cooked Italian meal (Koren explains that her husband David is a fantastic cook whose specialties include authentic Italian recipes).
The history of the company is fascinating and charming, and begins with Koren’s mother Toni Ray in 1991. Toni was the co-founder of Georgetown Leather Design in DC, the “it” spot during the 60’s and 70’s, where the in-crowd purchased fashionable and hip leather goods. In 1991, she cashed in her life savings and the Hobo International legacy began right here in Annapolis. Over the years and through various collections that may vary in color, size or design Koren explains that the philosophy behind Hobo International has remained a constant. Toni’s belief is that “cool” never goes out of style and that women’s accessories should be stylish and practical. As Hobo International celebrates its twenty-year anniversary, the Hobo philosophy is very much alive and an integral part of the international brand. Koren explains, “With every year, with every design, we take our promises seriously; to offer every woman the perfect way to express her individual spirit while navigating life’s journeys in style.”
The Fall 2011 Collection
Koren’s whole face lights up when she talks about the upcoming fall collection. Perhaps it is because 2011 marks the twenty-year anniversary for the brand, in addition to new exciting events such as the opening of the Annapolis flagship store and moving to new, larger offices in Maryland.
“My inspiration is really fed by constant channels…I always find that our customers are my greatest inspirations so I like to hear what they think…what they are wearing. I like to hear how they are using the bags in real life and how it’s helping them complete their style.” – Koren Brewer
This fall you can expect bold and beautiful colors like reds, purples and plums. Koren explained that women are moving towards “minis” and smaller bags that “create a cleaned up and tailored look.” Minis allow women to carry their phones and most important accessories in a creative yet stylish way. Without further adieu, images from the fall collection are available in the accompanying slideshow.
Be sure to check back in the coming weeks for a full interview with the stylish and talented Koren Brewer. Find out what items are her favorites when traveling to places like Hong Kong or New York City, her go-to spots to relax and dine in Annapolis and of course the opening of the Hobo International store in downtown Annapolis!
