Over the years, herbs have been used for a multitude of purposes including cooking, decoration and even medicinal healing. Now is the perfect time for Clevelanders to purchase fresh, homegrown herbs at the local Farmer’s Markets but if you want to celebrate the many uses of herbs or are interested in learning more about herbs then check out the Quailcrest Farm annual Herb Fair on Saturday, September 10 in Wooster, Ohio. Wooster is approximately a one hour drive from Cleveland.
Quailcrest Farm Herb Fair The site of more than 25 gardens, Quailcrest Farm is located on the edge of Ohio’s Amish country. The formal Herb Garden contains mints grown in terra cotta tiles, 21 thyme species, 10-20 rosemary varieties, a scented geranium bed, a bed of culinary herbs, germander, Varder Valley boxwood and Crimson Pygmy barberry, all bordered by lavender.
Set up among the gardens of Quailcrest Farm, the Herb Fest will feature over 70 artisans and craftsmen selling items like gourds, herbs, dried flowers, jewelry, stoneware, furniture, ironwork, baskets, bells, pressed flowers, clothing, creative clay and antiques.
Visitors will be able to take a walking tour of the gardens, take a stroll through the nearby woods and visit the 1800’s Schoolhouse (originally a smoke house) that was reconstructed on the property using the original bricks, trusses and window openings and now contains a fireplace and a collection of early antiques from the 1800’s. Outside, the Schoolhouse is surrounded by a variety of flowers and herbs like thyme, artemesia, bouncing bet and lavender. Be sure to check out the nearby Tea House Garden, originally created as a garden for the Cleveland Botanical Garden’s flower and garden show, Floralscape.
There will be plenty of food available at the Herb Fair including an herbal luncheon, the Farm’s famous sausage and homemade ice cream.
