Holiday gift baskets are a classic and welcome part of the holiday season. One company that makes particularly delicious holidays gifts and gift baskets is Harry & David. They’re known for their fresh fruit, apples, orange, pears (oh, those lovely, super-juicy Harry & David pears), and the Fruit of the Month Club.
All of the items in Harry & David gifts are delicious and high quality, but this reporter confesses to a favorite: their chocolate covered cherries. These are not the overly sweet chocolate cherries you find in cheap gifts and drug stores. Definitely not! These are genuine dried cherries, chewy and substantial, naturally sweet, and bathed in delicious chocolate with a shiny red coating. They’re almost as large as robins eggs.
“Happiness Delivered” is Harry & David’s motto and for more than 75 years, Harry & David has brought joy to people all year long. For the holidays, however, they’re pulling out all the stops by decorating their delicious, fresh fruit pears with chocolate and nuts in a hand-dipped pear sampler. The sweet taste of the pear, along with the creamy chocolate (in milk, dark and white), and a crunch of chopped nuts, would make even the fussiest person, smile, all for $49.95. More than 700,000 pear trees provide more than 17,000 tons of fruit per year, 95% of which are the Royal Riviera pears.
While the company is known for their fresh fruit, this year they are also adding “International Baskets” inspired by the cuisine of France, Spain and Italy. These are a little pricier at $99.95 but they make an impressive gift (and they are packaged nicely in a cloth lined wicker basket). The Italian basket, for example, features sopressata salami, green olive pate, marinated artichokes, Pecorino Sardo cheese, olive oil, balsamic, olive oil crostini, and roasted red peppers. The peppers and sopresatta I tasted at the preview were moist and delicious. But it was a gazillion degrees outside and I wondered how Harry & David ships these products. Most baskets are delivered in about five business days, but those with perishables (like cheese) are delivered in two days.
You can send a gift under $40.00 or splurge on something expensive and seriously impressive. No matter, what your budget, there will be something delicious to suit it. The Holiday Tower of Treats at $199.95 is the biggest gift — one to send in true grattitude, or to an office (instead of gifting tiny little presents to individuals). And if you’re truly a big spender or want to wow the stuffings out of someone, the Hearthside Gift Basket at $499.95 will be more than memorable, and it will take a long, long time to enjoy everything in it. They also have a note-able fuit of the month club.
Many grandmother used to say: “food is love.” Maybe that’s not always true, but a gift from Harry & David will always be a gift of love…and joy…and delight! And you don’t have to wait until the Winter holidays to enjoy what they’ve got or to make someone happy. Why not send a gift to your weekend host or hostess because you enjoyed their hospitality? Send a gift to newlyweds, or to a friend, “just because.” Treat yourself, too. You deserve it!
