In the first season of Happy Endings, Penny (Casey Wilson) takes a “jazz kwon-do” class after her self-defense workout gets too intense. By the end of the episode she has all of her friends in leotards and leg-warmers trying out a brand new routine. Fans of the ABC comedy series who were in attendance at the screening and panel at the Paley Center for Media in Los Angeles last night were treated to the little trivia nugget that esteemed feature film director Anne Fletcher actually came in to choreograph the number. It seemed she had a few days in between projects and wanted to work. But in season two when Wilson slips on her dance pants once again, this time the choreographer was just as esteemed…just in a different area.
Yes, it is special guest star Megan Mullally and Wilson herself who took a crack at choreographing a special dance number that the “mother-daughter singing duo” perform for old time’s sake.
“Penny and her mom have such a fun dynamic because her mom Dana is so positive, and you see why Penny is such a dreamer. Her mother takes it another level, [though],” Wilson teased of the dynamic that is brought when we “go home” with Penny, so to speak.
Dana comes to town to visit her daughter but also because she’s still a performer and is currently on tour, hence the revival of the old family act.
“She’s such a hardcore performer,” Wilson said of Mullally, “and let me tell you, this one over here has taken a scant two or three singing lessons, and then I was shoved into a recording studio with a Broadway singer. So just take it easy on me! But it was so fun!”
All this talk about Penny’s mom, but what about her dad? Wilson said she wasn’t sure Penny necessarily had just one father; in fact, she pictures a number of step-dads who may have been in and out of Penny’s life. Who would she want to play one of those guys? Why, her childhood crush Michael Keaton, of course…?
Hmm, cute or creepy to have an old crush playing a father figure? We guess it depends on what she’s going for! But it could explain Penny’s inability to find the right guy now. You can hear Wilson talk more about Mullally, Keaton, and how Penny and Alex (Elisha Cuthbert) will continue to wingman each other with guys in the second season of Happy Endings in our video chat to the left!
Happy Endings returns to ABC on September 28th at 9:30pm, right after Modern Family.
