Is there a vehicle more iconic of the Halo Universe than the ubiquitous warthog? Perhaps an argument could be made for the Ghost, but it’s hard to deny that there’s something about the lowly ‘hog that stirs the heart of video gamers. This Minimate version of the rocket hog, picked up in a San Francisco retailer over the weekend, sports the multiple launch rocket system, an upgrade featured in the later games, rather than the more familiar tri-barreled minigun.
Also included into the deal is a Red CQB Spartan II. The CQB armor permutation is available (as far as we know) for the first time in this wave, and is available as the warthog driver as well as in a two pack this wave. In terms of style and form, he falls somewhere between the previous Halo 3 armor permutations and the Reach characters, in that he is more detailed and less generically sculpted than the other permutations (ODST for example) while still shorter and less ‘chunky’ than the Reach figures.
These are a terrific set! The wheels and turret on the warthog are smooth and flawless in function. Paint apps on the vehicle and figure are perfect. The articulation of the figure is as expected, with all of the now traditional points of a minimate figure working corectly, with only minimal blocking from the armor overlays. Diamond Select Toys really seems to have worked out how to make these figures work since the first wave, where it seemed like all of the armor pieces interfered with other parts of the figure. The only complaint that can be made of the particular set in hand is that the lower left leg segment of the figure detaches rather more easily than it is supposed to.
