The Bull Terrier is a fun-loving fearless dog who traces her roots to 1800’s England. She was bred to participate in bull-baiting, but when it was discovered she was more of a lover than a fighter, she was bred as a pet for Royalty. There is no mistaking this breed’s oval-shaped head which slopes straight from her forehead to the tip of her nose. The Bull Terrier needs a lot of daily exercise; she is a terrier, after all. You’ll have plenty of time for play and exercise with your pet because grooming her is simple.
Here are some of the supplies you will need:
Slicker brush or grooming glove
Nail clippers and styptic powder
Ear cleaner and cotton balls
Brush your pet once a week or rub her down with a grooming glove. She will shed a little all the time, and more heavily twice a year.
Your pet should have her nails trimmed every other week. If the nail is light, trim where the white and pink meet, leaving a little white. If her nails are dark, trim them where they get thinner and start to curve. Have your styptic powder within reach in case you trim too close. A little pinch pressed on the too-short nail should stop any bleeding.
Clean her ears once a month. Squirt a little ear cleaner into her ear canal, let her shake her head, then wipe out her ear with a cotton ball.
Your pet can be bathed once a month, but if you miss a month here or there, it will not harm her. Use shampoo especially formulated for dogs. Wet her coat thoroughly in the bathtub, lather well, then rinse well. Shampoo left in her coat can irritate her skin. Dry her with towels.
If you live in or around Omaha and want to add a Bull Terrier to your active family, you do not have to go to a breeder. You can find and adopt a Bull Terrier from the Nebraska Humane Society. Log in at www.nehumanesociety.org, click on the adopt tab, then follow the instructions to register your interest in meeting a Bull Terrier. You will get an email when one comes into the shelter. Adopting saves lives!
