While appearing on ‘Project Runway: Season Eight’ designer Gretchen Jones garnered nearly as much attention for her jewelry as she did for her fashion sense. Since winning the reality television fashion competition Gretchen has moved from Oregon to Brooklyn and continued with both her fashion and her jewelry design. Most recently this fashion designer has created an exclusive jewelry collection for Piperlime.com
While describing the basic design of the collection as inspired by Egyptian pyramids and the cult film Holy Mountain Gretchen elaborated on her creative process in creating the exclusive Piperlime jewelry collection:
“This past year has been such a transformative period of time in my life, that evolution [or phoenix rising/Saturn return] and experience has had a PROFOUND effect on my character and goals as a woman AND designer,” Gretchen Jones said in an email to Examiner. “I like to give my work an intimate attachment/connection to my own experience…the names [from the collection] come from the book The Alchemist, which I recently re-read. The pyramids represent my desire to push higher and for more, challenging myself spiritually and creatively. I etched the magical symbols like the Medicine Man’s eye (representing wisdom), the Fence (denoting protection and good luck) and the Big Mountain (the emblem for abundance) as I believe those symbols connect us to far more than the modern world and can help guide us all to better ways of living and thinking.”

On top of the collections fashionable appeal it also supports and raises awareness for Aid to Artisans, an organization devoted to providing economic opportunities to help artisans build profitable craft businesses. 100% of the proceeds from sales will be donated to this cause.
Gretchen Jones not only promotes helping artisans create their own sustainable businesses- Jones practices what she preaches. While the line was designed by Jones herself the jewelry was handcrafted by artisans in impoverished Bogotá, Colombia. The collection is priced between $48 and $120 and is avilable only through Piperlime.com.
This is not Gretchen’s first time supporting such a cause. Her own line of clothing and jewelry, which can be purchased here on her website, is created with an eye on natural materials and ethical practices. The jewelry seen on her website is handmade locally and her clothing is made in alignment with Save the Garment Center, a NYC-based organization that supports local and international craftspeople and focuses on ethical business practices.
Gretchen isn’t the only ‘Project Runway’ star with a jewlery collection. Click here to see Heidi Kulm’s new ‘Wildlife’ jewelry collection, available this fall.
