Contemplating Saturday plans, the normal thoughts came up. Sign of the Whale in midtown, or maybe Iron Horse in Chinatown? After an incredibly fun birthday party the night before, a simple night in sounded most appealing. I grabbed a pink colored wine from the cellar that looked to match the day perfectly.
The 2010 La Bastide Saint Dominique Grenache-Syrah Rose from the Rhone Valley in France is an incredibly refreshing concoction, perfect for the weather on this great Saturday. While the winery is mostly know for their Chateauneuf-du-Papes (CDPs), they definitely utilized their wine making skills for this one. The wine has a great nose with strawberry and cherry flavors which make for an extremely refreshing finish. I opened it on the patio and was relieved on the first sip which cooled me down from the 90 degree sun.
When I picked this wine up at Unwined Gourmet Wine and Cigars I was definitely taking a chance, as I knew that this winery had produced some great CDPs, but I was not aware they were into rose. At $10.99, it is surprising me even more, a great value.
As we moved in doors, I decided to open another bottle, this time a red to help us warm up from the AC. The 2008 Las Rocas Garnacha from Spain has been a wine I’ve been drinking for years, and is possibly one of the first I drank frequently starting off on my journey of wine. I picked it up on sale at a local Harris Teeter for $9.99 down from $13.99, so another great value.
The red has a fantastic aroma of spices, a fruity and slightly spicy taste, and a easy and smoothe finish. I will continue to sample this wine for years to come.
Until next time, enjoy!
Unwined Gourmet Wine and Cigars has two locations in both Alexandria and Burke, Virginia.
