If you’re not already watching Cougar Town, we’re out to shame you into picking up the DVDs and starting now! What’s not to love about this group of Friends (see what we did there?) who like nothing more than to gather ‘round, drink wine, and snark on each other?
If you’ve been putting off picking it up because of the title, you’re a fool, and if you feared it would be too similar to Courteney Cox’ other show about friends, well, sure, similarities can be drawn, but that can be said about just about all modern comedies on television today. Cougar Town is fresh and new and exciting not only for its interactions between characters but also the catchphrases and games they make-up on-screen. So much of the show is one big “inside joke” between the members of the cul-de-sac crew, but they have such heart and real love for each other, you can’t help but want to become the surrogate eighth member. Well, tenth member, if you count the series creators who are behind-the-camera chapter members.
Now you can play catch up with the Cougar Town gang with the Complete Second Season on DVD. In addition to the episodes that see the gang giving each other Friend Tests, getting each other through broken hearts and food allergies, babysitting each others’ kids, interacting with special guest stars like Jennifer Aniston, Nia Vardalos, and Ken Jenkins, and even going on one big family vacation to Hawaii, there are ample extras designed to help you get to know and understand who these people really are.
Deleted scenes and outtakes are expected, but the box set also includes all six web series episodes of “Andy’s Dreams,” plus an introduction and special behind-the-scenes look with the actor himself. An instant classic? Seeing movie mash-ups come to life as short films. Even if only in Andy Torres (Ian Gomez)’s twisted little mind. Cah-mon!
“(Still Called) Cougar Town: Season Two” is a behind-the-scenes look at the second season, featuring cast interviews from their on-location set in Hawaii, as well as potshots at each other worthy of any episode. If you thought each actor was just playing an amplified version of his or herself in the series…well, this featurette pretty much proves you right! But it’s pretty funny to watch them try to deny it. And to watch Josh Hopkins do his impressions of everybody else– and then to have everybody else try to do their impression of Josh Hopkins doing an impression of themselves.
Plus, pay special attention to the title card of each episode. Series creators Bill Lawrence and Kevin Biegel spend a lot of time coming up with something clever to put in front of the title with which they are so begrudgingly stuck. The results? Usually self-deprecating (hey, Biegel was nicknamed Seinfeld guy in his on-screen cameo), but always chuckle-worthy.
‘Cougar Town: The Complete Second Season’ is on DVD as of August 30th 2011. What are you waiting for? Gather up all the pennies you previously just used for Penny Can and pre-order your copy now!
