The Golden Lion Café in Flagler Beach is a popular, laid-back tiki bar kind of place that serves good food and live music. Sunday afternoons and evenings are an especially fun time. This year the Cafe was awarded the Best Waterside Beach bar designation.
On August 28, Florida Governor Rick Scott and State Senator John Thrasher dropped in for dinner, and afterward they bravely took the stage to sing a couple of audience requests. Palm Coast musician Kevin Quinn was the featured act, but he graciously invited the two political celebrities to share the spotlight, while surprised fans took pictures, videos and sang along.
Scott played the tambourine and Thrasher clapped his hands while the impromptu trio sang their rendition of the Pointer Sisters’ hit song “Fire,” and the audience hollered for more. So they did an encore by singing a Beatles classic, “I Saw Her Standing There.”
Quinn said that his special guest singers “sang pretty loud,” and he remarked how “personable” Scott was. Quinn performs at the Golden Lion under the stage name “Kevin Quinn The Experience.”
Golden Lion owners Carolyn and Tony Marlow were also surprised by the governor’s visit on Sunday. The audience consisted largely of the regular crowd and a wedding party. Carolyn took a cell phone video of the performance, which is posted to this article. The governor took time to pose for photos with some of the restaurant’s diners and staff.
This was Scott’s first visit to the Golden Lion. He was in Flagler Beach for a Monday morning Flagler County Chamber of Commerce breakfast.
Quinn noted that the governor spent a lot of time talking to everyone. He added that while some diners were supporters of the governor, there also were some from the opposing camp.
While some of the negative comments cannot be printed here, most of the diners gave the governor a warm Flagler County greeting. One customer told him, “You’re a rock star, you should go on tour,” The governor said that he was pretty happy with his day job.
As soon as Scott and Thrasher showed up at the Golden Lion, bloggers on Facebook and other Web sites heard about it and started posting their comments. Laura Lee Stapleton said “Really??? He has great taste!!!” Debra Simms said “I had such a great time. G’vnor seems like a real good guy.” FireDonn said “I’m a retired firefighter and I’m glad to see Rick Scott, or anyone, having a good time here in Flagler Beach. I’m glad the governor is out meeting and greeting the people to find out firsthand what is needed to get this state’s economy moving again.”
