America faces a threat of Dominionism and now Rick Perry, Mitt Romney, and Michele Bachmann have signed a pledge that is the beginning of theocratic rule in America. The National Organization for Marriage (NOM) anti-gay pledge establishes Christian standards that will have the full weight and authority of the U.S. government behind it and the pledge renders the Constitution null and void.
The NOM pledge is a five point promise that a Republican president must follow that destroys the 1st Amendment’s “establishment clause” guaranteeing religious freedom, and 14th Amendment’s guarantee that all men are created equal. The pledge also guarantees that a Republican president forces Christian Dominionists’ edicts on every America in stark contrast to our Constitution.
There is nothing in the pledge that will help the economy, create jobs, provide for national defense, or help Americans feel secure now and in the future. What the pledge does ensure is that a Republican president will preside over a 21st Century Christian Inquisition and Crusade that harkens back to the Salem witch-trials. The first part of the pledge is nothing new and it says that a Republican president will, “support sending a federal constitutional amendment defining marriage as the union of one man and one woman to the states for ratification.” The NOM pledge is attempting to insert into the Constitution an ancient Jewish law straight from the bible (Gen. 2:24).
In the second part of the NOM pledge, it says a Republican president will, “Nominate to the U.S. Supreme Court and federal bench judges who are committed to restraint and to applying the original meaning of the Constitution, appoint an attorney general similarly committed, and thus reject the idea our Founding Fathers inserted a right to gay marriage into our Constitution.” For the record, the Constitution makes no mention of any kind of marriage and it is another attempt at establishing theocratic rule in place of our representative democracy the Founding Fathers established over 200 years ago.
Part three of the NOM pledge is nothing new for the Christian bigots. It states a Republican president will “defend the federal Defense of Marriage Act vigorously in court.” Although DOMA is contrary to the Constitution, it is part of the Christian Dominionist attempt to force all Americans to fall in line and obey biblical edicts whether they are fanatical Christian fundamentalists or not.
The most dangerous part of the pledge is the fourth point and it should frighten every freedom-loving American to death. It says a Republican president has to, “Establish a presidential commission on religious liberty to investigate and document reports of Americans who have been harassed or threatened for exercising key civil rights to organize, to speak, to donate or to vote for marriage and to propose new protections.” Religious zealots have claimed for years that people who do not agree with the bible are guilty of harassing Christians, and with a presidential commission to seek out and punish non-believers, a modern-day Christian Inquisition will begin with backing from the government.
Although the pledge deletes the notion that equality is guaranteed for all Americans, it does not bother Republicans who have been on a tear to dismantle the Constitution one amendment at a time. However, it is more frightening that three of the front-runners for the Republican nomination for president have promised that if elected, will enforce biblical law in place of the Constitution. There is also the hypocrisy aspect of the pledge. Bachmann and Perry are states’ rights champions who have signed on to use the federal government to supersede state’s rights and force religious dogmata on the American public. The pledge does not say what protections a presidential commission will institute, but it does portend very bad things for Americans who support equal rights for gays.
Historically, when Christians control a government and begin forcing their beliefs on a country, there will be death and destruction that makes the Taliban look mild. America is in jeopardy of losing its Constitution so fanatical Christian extremists can install the Ten Commandments as the law of the land. If Americans do not wake up to the Christian Dominionist threat, no-one will be safe and there will be Salem witch trials in every city in America. No advocates for traditional marriage have been harassed or threatened, but the Christian fanatics have beaten, harassed and murdered gays for not complying with the bible.
America is much closer to theocratic rule than the public is aware of, and it is tragic that America will revert to 14th Century barbarism as fanatical Christian extremists begin their Inquisition and Crusade against non-believers. The scariest part is they will have the backing of the White House to investigate and punish innocent Americans who support equal rights for all. The level of religious zealotry the Republicans advocate will not help create jobs, bolster economic recovery, or ensure domestic security, but that is not the focus of Republicans. Instituting a religious replacement for the Constitution is their focus and it is sad that religious dogmata is more important than helping Americans put food on the table and a roof over their family’s heads.
America will go from the 21st Century straight into the Dark Ages with a Republican president and the NOM pledge gives a glimpse in black-and-white exactly how Dominionist theocracy will begin. Willard Romney, Jim Richard Perry, and Michele Bachmann have signaled their advocacy of destroying the Constitution to make the ancient Jewish mythology the law of the land and most Americans are sitting back allowing it to happen. Support for the three Christian extremist presidential candidates is support for theocracy and McCarthyism that will make the Dark Age Inquisition look like an ice-cream social. It is what happens when fanatic Christians gain a foothold in government and it is the end of America.
