This writer remains hopeful that the richest country in the world would never actually default on any of its debt obligations. For one thing, defaulting would be incredibly stupid given how costly it would be for our economy and ultimately for the American people. Not only would defaulting on our debt spike up interest rates but it would take a weak economy that’s sputtering along and bring it to a complete stall and then shift it into reverse. It would put our Aaa credit rating at risk and turn our identity as a stellar rated strong creditworthy investment into to a highly speculative investment like a subprime mortgage, for lack of a better analogy. Former Obama administration economist Austan Goolsbee said it best “it would be the first default in history caused purely by insanity.”
At the heart of this insane, stupid, reckless default movement, is the Tea Party fringe of the Republican party. It has become increasingly apparent that these Tea Party folk would happily welcome the destruction of the country in the hopes that the American people are stupid enough to cast blame on the president. Fortunately for the country, the Tea Party extremists do not represent the najority of Americans, but there have been enough sent to Washington to cause roadblocks to any compromise which can result in serious consequences for the country as we see with the current budget debate.
Extreme positions like the Tea Party movement cannot be satisfied without detriment to the whole country. Just like Communism, dictatorial regimes, and theocracies do not work, neither does Tea Party-ism – a morally bankrupt ideology that promotes class warfare by putting the poor and working class in a position to have to decide between food and medication while the rich and wealthy continue to prosper having to decide between a yacht and private jet. If that’s not enough, the Tea Party movement includes those who are driven by the unwarranted hatred of President Obama who they often refer to as the Messiah, a Socialist, Marxist, etc. The newly elected Tea Party freshmen have made it clear they will do whatever it takes to make President Obama a “one term president”, even it means destroying the country.
For many of these Tea Party members this lack of compromise goes beyond just disagreeing with the president’s policies. No president has had to endure what this president has. The waste of time that was the birther movement, the paranoid schizophrenia as talk radio tells Tea Partiers that the president wants to take their liberties and their property away, the death panels nonsense, all of this stuff with no rationale driven purely by disdain and hate of this president. His arrogance, his lies, his bravado – sounds a little too personal to just be his policies. If we are to progress as a nation, it is time for any rational thinking American to stand up to these Tea Party politicians who represent this mindset and run them out of office.
The challenges that this president took on from his very first day in office were unprecedented. The country was left in shambles and now on top of it the president has to deal with a Congress in the hands of extreme right-wing ideologues. Ideologues that have shown that they do not care about the interests of poor and working class Americans.
Fortunately, most of America is not a Tea Party nation. The President’s approval rating is currently at 47% despite all the challenges that continue to face him. In the final analysis President Obama will easily be re-elected to the Office of President of the United States in 2012. So there is still some hope left.
