Ok, all of us want that perfect pet. You know the one everybody thinks is just ‘so cute’. The one that is formidable and lets all in eyesight know it is the Alpha Dog. The one that is alert to new comers, however then goes to crate or bed and isn’t barking, scratching, jumping unless called upon for tricks. Doesn’t everyone want the pet that when friends come to visit, they say ‘What a well behaved dog!’
Well here is the rub. Dogs need to know their boundaries and their limits. We must train them and this will take time, energy and patients. Your dog wants this information. They want to please you. They want make you happy. We must be willing to put in the “sweat equity’ to reap the benefits. And what benefits there will be. This dog is going to be your best friend. No strings attached, just plain love.
Recently a friend ask what should be done with a 3 your old dog that seems to be not house-trained. First the house training seems to be limited to nothing. This dog rules everyone and everything. Everything! The owners are new to the dog and have taken him to the Vet for well checks. The Vet believes the dog to be healthy and never been trained.
Okay! My guess is all of us at one time or another have had a pet with a bad or annoying habit. This is not by any means limited to puppies. Dogs seek limitation and really want praise. A 3-year-old dog could try our patients, but is trainable. It is best to start with a puppy. However, a three-year-old dog is still trainable and is very eager to please you. So we must have the time, energy and patients. We cannot expect a dog to ‘just know’ what to do. If we don’t want to put in the ‘sweat equity’ we might want to re-think the pet idea.
We need a trusted trainer to help with getting started and we must stick to our training. A 3-year-old dog is just waiting to be trained. And people will be saying our pet is the cutest, best behaved and we will beam at the acknowledgement of our work together. You can start with training lessons once a week, working with you dog for at least one-hour very day. Here is the thing, when you’re not working with the dog – be thinking of the training you have just initiated. For instance, if you have been working on sit stay, try to include this with feeding time. Have you dog sit at the door to the room you feed it in and wait until you call it to come in a eat.
We all should enjoy our pets and enjoy other people loving them to.
