The Carolinas have been called a Mecca for golfers. People come from all over the world to play courses Pinehurst No. 2, at Pinehurst Resort, in the Village of Pinehurst, that will be hosting both the men’s and women’s U.S. Open championships in 2014. My brother-in-law Frank drives down to Myrtle Beach from Ohio every year with a few buddies to play the courses there.
Yet some people seek more exotic spots to play, and if you are in that group, here’s one for you, with a chance to see championship play as well.
Pristine Bay Resort in Roatan, Honduras has announced it will host the 69th Central American Golf Championship on its Pete- and Perry Dye-designed Black Pearl Golf Course, February 25 – March 3, 2012.
The Central American Golf Championship started in 1944 and switches host countries yearly and is regarded as the most important Central American golf competition. Participants play both a team and individual format. The event has been won 18 times by Costa Rica, followed by Guatemala with 14 titles. Golfers also compete for men’s and women’s titles in regular and senior divisions. This is the first time the contest will be held on Roatan.
The par-72, 7,179-yard layout features 14 holes with ocean views and places a premium on shot making. Perhaps most perilous for the elite field will be the signature hole — the 157-yard island-green, par-3 11th – with its elevated tee, ubiquitous trade winds and tournament pressure making proper club selection challenging.
“The Central American Golf Championship will be the first esteemed tournament played on The Black Pearl,” says Mario Toriello, Vice President of Sales and Marketing. “When combining our distinguished course with Roatan’s natural beauty, numerous resort amenities and array of real estate options, it’s little wonder that the island has become one of the world’s hottest locales for tourists and second-home owners.”
Roatan has long been a haven for SCUBA diving aficionados who come to see the spectacular Meso-American Barrier Reef. Pristine Bay Resort offers customize packages that include deluxe villa accommodations and golf, as well as local dining, island transportation, zip-lining, deep sea fishing, diving, snorkeling and even swimming with dolphins in the Caribbean’s crystal-clear waters.
The island of Roatan is 35 miles off the coast of Honduras, and Pristine Bay Resort is situated on a 400-plus acre site adjacent to the Caribbean Sea. The azure waters off the coast of the island, enhanced by the world’s second largest barrier reef, provide a stunning backdrop and one of the truly unique settings for golf in Central America.
Dye Designs, pioneers of the use of Paspalum turf for tropics-based projects, is grassing The Black Pearl with this salt-water tolerant strand known for its environmental compatibility, ease of irrigation and maintenance, and translucent green hue. Its appearance — juxtaposed against the turquoise waters offshore – inspired The Black Pearl’s tagline: “The Best Greens and the Best Blues.”
