Sometimes after a rainstorm a beautiful rainbow will appear in the clouds. It is a wonderful thing to look at, especially when it goes from one side of the sky to the other side.
As we gaze at the beauty and majesty of the rainbow, we can also remember that it is a sign that the covenant that God made with Noah, humankind, and the earth after the great flood is still in effect. This covenant is found in Genesis 9:11-15 (NASB):
“’I establish My covenant with you [Noah and his family]; and all flesh shall never again be cut off by the water of the flood, neither shall there again be a flood to destroy all the earth.’ And God said ’This is the sign of the covenant . . . I set My bow in the cloud and it shall be for a sign of a covenant between Me and the earth. And it shall come about, when I bring a cloud over the earth that the bow shall be seen in the cloud and I will remember My covenant, which is between Me and you [Noah and his family] and every living creature of all flesh; and never again shall the water become a flood to destroy all flesh.”
God made this covenant after He caused a great flood that destroyed every person on the earth except Noah and his family. God did this after making an inspection of what was happening on earth, as described in Genesis 6:5-7:
“Then the LORD saw that the wickedness of man was great on the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continuously. And the LORD was sorry that He had made man and the earth, and was grieved in His heart. And the LORD said ‘I will blot out man whom I have created from the face of the land, from man to animals to creeping things and to the birds of the sky; for I am sorry that I have made them.”
However, as God looked around some more, He found a man and his family who was righteous and because of that, God decided to start over using them so that possibly they would produce more people like them who would live according to God’s principles.
Since “Noah found favor in the eyes of the LORD,” (Genesis 6:8) God said to him: “The end of all flesh has come before Me, for the earth is filled with violence because of them; and behold I am about to destroy them with the earth. Make yourself an ark of gopher wood . . . and you shall enter the ark-you and your sons and your wife and your sons’ wives with you. And of everything of all flesh, you shall bring two of every kind into the ark, to keep them alive with you, they shall be male and female . . . two of every kind shall come to you to keep them alikve.” (Genesis 6:18-20)
Noah followed what God told him since he wanted to live according to God’s principles and because he did that, humankind was spared from being destroyed by their Creator.
We can apply this lesson of living a righteous life by following God’s principles to our modern day since Jesus prophesied that “the coming of the Son of Man will be just like the days of Noah.” (Matthew 24:37) This is because of what Genesis 6:11-13 said was happening during the time of Noah is happening now.
Once again much of the earth is filled with violence as many people have corrupted themselves by rebelling against God’s principles. However, there is also a remnant of people who want to follow God’s principles for living in the midst of the great spiritual darkness of people breaking God’s laws.
Just like the judgement came suddenly upon the ungodly people of Noah’s day, .Jesus further compares that to His coming by saying that “in those days before the flood they were eating and drinking . . . until the day Noah entered the ark, and they did not understand until the flood came and took them all away; so shall the coming of the Son of Man be.” (Matthew 24:38-39)
In other words, Jesus is saying that people who are not following God’s principles for living, but instead are in a lifestyle of breaking God’s laws don’t realize that the judgement of God will come to them and upon the earth so suddenly that they will not be able to do anything about it
Therefore. people need to be ready for the judgement day when Jesus returns by having a personal relationship with Him as their personal Savior and living according to God’s principles.
So now, when we see a beautiful rainbow in the sky after a rainstorm, let us remember that it is a sign that God’s covenant about not bringing a totally destructive flood on the earth is still in effect. Let us also remember the lesson of how Noah lived a righteous life in the midst of great spiritual darkness and follow his example and thus be ready for the time when Jesus comes back to earth again.
