Pitt’s Ashton Gibbs scored 8 points to help Team USA beat Israel 94-84 Thursday to improve to 5-0 and advance to the quarterfinals at the World University Games in Shenzhen, China. He hit 2 of 4 three-pointers. Gibbs did not start the game but his 22 minutes of action led the team.
Israel’s 43-41 halftime lead marked the first time Team USA trailed at the break in the tournament. The Americans tore off a 29-19 run in the third quarter to retake the lead. They also out-rebounded Israel 43-34 to help fuel the win.
Alabama’s JaMychal Green led the Americans in scoring for the second-straight game with 16 points
Team USA will now face Lithuania (4-1) in the quarterfinal round on Saturday. Should they win, they would face the winner of the Canada (3-1) – Romania (3-2) game on Sunday. The gold medal game is scheduled for Monday.
