Strange things were happening in Tombstone in the summer of 1881. What was even stranger was that some people were not able to descend after they were dead and decided to go on walking around the city and continued to disturb the little mining town in SE Arizona.
Just before dawn on June 16, 1881, the unsettled ghosts which had been seen on several occasions, paid a visit to the neighborhood of Second and Bruce Streets. This area is just a few blocks east of Allen Street. It was there that the spirits disturbed the sleep of some of the residents who at that time worked for the Tombstone Epitaph.
One of the folks in the neighborhood had gone to the front door to get a drink of water and saw a ghost waltzing around the stone pathway looking as if he was happy and having a good time. Whether it was really a ghost or just the strangeness taste of water, it is not known. But, the gentleman turned around quickly and yelled to his companions to come and take a look. He was so scared that he spilled his water all over the floor while shaking and trying to call out his housemates. His friends dashed to the door just in time to see the ghost making rapid strides for his home in the graveyard nearby.
The residents warned the ghostly intruder to keep away from the vicinity for they were peaceful, hard-working sort of people and refused to be bullied by a ghost. Besides, a gentleman at that time would house numerous guns if the ghost was merely an intruder on the prowl.
Second and Bruce Streets are only a few blocks from the notorious Boot Hill Cemetery of Tombstone where ghosts have been felt and seen on many occasions. Boot Hill was established as a burial plot in 1878. It was the cemetery of the town’s first pioneers and used until some time around 1884 when the present cemetery was opened. A midnight walk through this old neighborhood on the way to the cemetery might warrant a ghostly encounter or two.
From Phoenix take I 10 East and take exit 303 at Benson. Continue south on HWY 80 to Tombstone. Boot Hill Cemetery will be found just northwest of Tombstone as you enter town.
