Sony’s released the first photos from “Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance,” now in post-production, and your friendly, neighborhood Fanboys Examiner has them for you here. The most notable thing is that the shot of the Ghost Rider looks, dare we say it, practical. One thing about CGI flame is that it almost always tends to look CGI, and that was a problem on the first movie. Not that we’re suggesting that they set Nicholas Cage’s head on fire, but to do this character you have to be able to sell the image of a flaming skull.
Mark Steven Johnson, who directed “Daredevil” and “Ghost Rider” does not return for this installment, which is co-directed by “Crank” collaborators Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor from a story by David S. Goyer and screenplay by Scott M. Gimple and Seth Hoffman. Sadly, Eva Mendes also is not on board for the sequel, although the excellent Ciaran Hinds (“Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2) and the hot-as-Hell Idris Elba (“Thor”) join the cast. Hinds plays the devil, and should be wonderful in the role.
According to IMDb, this time around the story is that “As Johnny Blaze hides out in Eastern Europe, he is called upon to stop the devil, who is trying to take human form.”
“Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance” is set to open Februay 17, 2012.
