SAUGET, ILL. – Well, it had to end at some point.
And with three home runs on Tuesday, the Gateway Grizzlies made sure the River City Rascals eight-game win streak came to end at GCS Ballpark, with a 6-5 loss for the visitors.
All-time Frontier League home run champ Charlie Lisk, along with Chris Sedon and Kent Gerst each bashed solo homers for the Grizzlies, while first baseman Logan Parker, who went 5-for-9 with two HRs and six RBIs in the series, added a key two-run double to spark Gateway to the win.
The victory, in front of an announced home crowd of 4,521, allowed the Grizzlies to pick up a game on the first-place Rascals in the Frontier League West Division.
Gateway is now 25-34 on the season, 18 games behind River City, which slips to 43-16 in 2011.
The Rascals got its first four scores on a pair of two-run homers by Jareck West (#8) and Chad Maddox (#9).
New rookie Andres Caceres, who just signed with Gateway out of Arkansas State University, got the win in his Grizzlies debut, pitching five innings and allowing just two runs on four hits, with two strikeouts and four walks.
Closer Chris Enourato gave up one run, on a two-out Jason Patton single in the ninth, but struck out Stephen Holdren for the final out to pick up his fifth save of the season.
Zach Robertson (6-1) suffered his first loss of the season for River City, giving up all six Gateway runs on six hits and three walks, with two strikeouts.
The Rascals will now head home to T.R. Hughes Ballpark in O’Fallon, for a three-game series with the Florence Freedom.
All three games in the set with Florence are scheduled for 7:05 p.m. first pitches, with Zach Sterner, Wayde Kitchens, and Erick Carillo getting the starts for River City.
Gateway will head out on a six-game road trip, first heading to Indiana to play three against the Evansville Otters, then going to the Corn Crib in Normal for a set against the CornBelters.
