Memphis rocker Jay Reatard born Jimmy Lee Lindsey Jr, dedicated his life to music, and when he died in 2010 at the age of 29 the prolific singer and composer left the world 22 full-length albums, over 100 releases and a treasure trove of unreleased work.
The feature length documentary, Better Than Something by New York City filmmakers Alex Hammond and Ian Markiewicz, will have its west coast premiere at the Roxie Theatre August 17.
The 89 minute film captures the controversial garage rock icon in an intimate portrait months before his untimely passing, bringing audience members close to Jay’s complicated punk-rock world in Memphis, Tennessee.
Better Than Something eloquently interweaves cinéma vérité, interviews, and archival concert performances, and features scenes from an insightful and candid week spent with Jay, who reveals personal childhood stories and the struggles of life in Memphis.
Showtime is 7:30pm and 9:30pm.
