Madden NFL 12 was recently released on August 30, 2011 in the U.S. for the PS3, 360, Wii, PSP, PS2 and iPhone/iPad. Madden NFL 12 was available for EA Sports Season Ticket subscribers for three days starting on August 27. Madden 12 was developed by EA Tiburon and published by EA Sports, and it is rated E (Everyone).
The official demo for Madden 12 came out on August 9 for Xbox Live and PSN, featuring the 2011 NFC Championship game between the Green Bay Packers and Chicago Bears (McElroy).
The genre of Madden 12 is an American-football sport simulation game. Single-player, multiplayer and online are the major game modes in the game. Peyton Hillis, current starting halfback for the Cleveland Browns, is the cover athlete for Madden 12. Also, the announcers from Madden 11 return (Gus Johnson and Cris Collinsworth).
There will definitely be more establishments in the series and its predecessor is Madden 11. Madden 12 is the nineteenth installment in the Madden NFL series (twenty-fourth if you begin with the John Madden Football series). The first game came out in 1988 and it is called John Madden Football.
Positives for Madden 12 include the great-looking graphics and the individual player movements are neat and endless. Tackles/collisions look more lifelike now and players can now play better or worse based on their hot/cold status, consistency and confidence. Other than that, there are small things, such as being able to do a surprise onside kick, joining communities and changing all kinds of settings in an online matchup, including ranked team-play matches now. Finally, the new presentation scenes are good for the franchise with uncanny resemblance to watching a game on television with the real-life camera positions and the way the camera follows the ball on a kickoff.
In franchise mode, there are now cut days where you have to decide which players to drop in order to get to the maximum roster amount. Free agency returns, but with a twist. You now must bid on players and the other teams will bid at the same time, resulting in a fast-paced auction. Players now improve/decline one year after the next much quicker than before, sometimes ending up with a 10+ point difference for certain stat categories. In conclusion, trades can now be done with players and/or future draft picks.
Negatives for Madden 12 include the fact that the gameplay is pretty much the same as its past few predecessors. The commentary is possibly the worst ever for a Madden game. The game presentations are new and good, but become repetitive like the commentary. The scouting and draft still is not up to par with where it should be after several years. The problem of having the lead blocker not blocking anybody is still an issue. Also, replay challenges still seem to be inaccurate. Other than that, there are small nuances, such as linebackers jumping too high and the trading system still offers no counteroffer or feedback.
Metacritic gave it a Metascore of 80 out of 100 for the 360 and 79 for the PS3 (the other versions have not yet received scores).
Even though Madden 12 has some downsides, it is still worth buying, unless you already have Madden 11 and/or do not care about football video games. For those who don’t fit those qualifications, this game is perfect for you and can be purchased here in St. Louis.
At GameStop/EB Games, Sears, Family Video, Kmart, Walmart, Target and Amazon.com, Madden 12 is about $60 for the PS3/360, $90 for the Hall of Fame Edition for the PS3/360, $50 for the Wii, and $40 for the PS2/PSP.
