After racking up 22 hits in the previous two games, the Gwinnett Braves were limited to 2 hits in Sunday’s 5-0 loss to Pawtucket at Coolray Field. The G-Braves (67-55) fall to 1.5 games behind the Durham Bulls (67-52) in the International League South while Pawtucket (69-52) holds a slim half-game lead over Lehigh Valley in the IL North.
Both teams were scoreless in the opening frame before Daniel Nava led-off the 2nd inning with a homer, his sixth of the year, giving the Red Sox all the runs they would need on this day. They scored one more run in the 2nd and plated a pair in the 4th inning to push the lead to 4-0. Pawtucket finished the scoring by adding a run in the 6th inning.

LHP Yohan Flande (L, 7-7, 3.99 with 1 Save) made his 15th start of the year and worked 5.0 innings, allowed 5 runs (earned) on 7 hits with 4 walks and 2 strikeouts. He also threw his eighth wild pitch of the year; LHP Ben Swaggerty (ND, 0-0, 8.27 ERA) entered the game in the 6th inning with runners on first and second and none out. He had the best outing in his last 6 appearances holding the Red Sox scoreless and hitless while striking out one; RHP J.J. Hoover (ND, 0-1, 8.22 ERA with 1 Save) made his 4th appearance since being called up from Double-A Mississippi and didn’t give up a run or a hit while walking one and striking one out; LHP Dustin Richardson (0-0, 4.50 ERA) pitched the 9th inning and made it 5.0 scoreless innings from the bullpen. He threw 1.0 inning and allowed 1 hit while striking out 2 of the 4 batters he faced.
Red Sox RHP Matt Fox (8-4, 4.21 ERA) stated and pitched his first shutout as well as his first complete game of the year while holding the G-Braves to 2 hits. He only walked 1 while ringing up 7 K’s. Wilkin Castillo (.275, 3 Hrs/28 RBI) was at 3B and was 1-for-3; SS Brandon Hicks (.262, 15 Hrs/ 40 RBI) went 1-for-2 after coming in for Tyler Pastornicky , who left the game in the 6th inning with an apparent right leg injury.
Gwinnett and Pawtucket play the final game of this series Monday at Coolray Field before the G-Braves leave for a six day road trip that starts in Syracuse on Tuesday. RHP Erik Cordier (4-8, 5.35 ERA) takes the hill for Gwinnett while the Red Sox will send RHP Brandon Duckworth (8-6, 5.35 ERA). Cordier is coming off a win in his last start when he held the SWB Yankees to a single run on a pair of hits in 6.0 innings pitched.
International League News:
The IL announced Syracuse outfielder Corey Brown and 22-year-old Durham pitcher Matt Moore earned IL Batter and Pitcher of the Week honors for week ending August 8th.
