NEWS from the liberterrain…
Alliance Airport in northwest Fort Worth is Ground Zero for the Texas contribution to the ongoing endeavor libertarians refer to as The War On Some Drugs.
Alliance has reportedly played host to both sides in the war.
Both Mexican drug cartel gunrunners and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) have been flying out of the facility.
Alliance is home to the DEA’s Air Operations Center while the cartels have been using Alliance as a collection and airborne transshipment point for military type weapons like grenade launchers, antiaircraft missiles, body armor, GPS devices, and night vision binoculars bound for Mexico.
Meanwhile, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF for short), the agency charged with regulating firearms, is itself accused of running guns into Mexico in a clandestine scheme known as Operation Fast and Furious, called the “Gunwalker Scandal” by online Gun Rights Examiners who broke the news long before the mainstream media ever new about it.
The accusation is that ATF instructed Arizona gun sellers to turn a blind eye to illegal gun purchases, allowing the weapons to “walk” across the Mexican border so agents could track them as part of a sting operation to shut down the smuggling.
Two of these weapons were traced back to the murder of two US Border Patrol agents.
Some libertarians insist the real purpose behind the covert delivery of guns to Mexican drug thugs was a “false flag” operation designed to give the Obama administration further justification for imposing yet more anti-gun regulations on American gun sellers.
There’s no proof of this, but the Obama administration has been stonewalling congressional investigation into the whole affair.
Libertarians point out that in a free society there would be no drug cartels and no ATF since both drugs and guns would be sold like any other product by legitimate businesses.
But government prohibition of some drugs keeps the price of those drugs artificially high, thereby guaranteeing exorbitant profits for the drug suppliers and exorbitant tax funding for the government anti-drug enforcement agencies. Excessive government regulation of guns has a similar effect on gun ownership.
Alliance Airport was built with city and federal tax funds and private money. The land was acquired in part, as described by D magazine, “Fort Worth’s seizure of land for Ross Perot’s Alliance Airport, built on an airstrip seized by the FAA.”
