Nothing is more joyous than getting something for free, especially when it’s free theater. The Independent Shakespeare Co. is currently hosting its annual Griffith Park Free Shakespeare Festival, which offers free, live theater to the general public from June 30th through August 28th. Founded in 1998, the mission of the Independent Shakespeare Co. is to foster diversity in theater and to make theater accessible to a wider audience.
The festival features prominent Shakespeare plays such as The Merry Wives of Windsor, Hamlet, and Love’s Labour’s Lost. The plays are held in a hidden paradise in the hills at the Griffith Park Old Zoo at 7:00 p.m. on select days.
The audience is encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets, as there are no stadium seats. Expect to arrive at least an hour early to sit closest to the stage.
Upon arrival, you will find a modest stage surrounded by a beautiful display of caves, trees, and mountains. Since the festival takes place in a nature park, you may want to use bug repellant to avoid the minor annoyances that come with greenery.
The scenery and entertainment are perfect for a romantic getaway or a family picnic. You also have the option to pre-order a catered BBQ meal from Delilah Bakery for $10.
A night at the Shakespeare Festival is more affordable than going to the movies! In addition to its affordability, the plays are filled with humorous and tragic entertainment that reminds audience members of Shakespeare’s creative brilliance in his prime.
