The NFL lockout came to its conclusion on July 25, and undrafted free agents have been signing NFL contracts at an unprecedented rate. On Wednesday, it was confirmed that former Oregon cornerback Talmadge Jackson III has signed with the Baltimore Ravens.
Jackson became the seventh Oregon graduate to play for the Ducks historic 2010 season and sign an NFL contract in the past 72 hours. The only Oregon graduate from this year who was drafted in April’s NFL Draft was MLB Casey Matthews. In addition, former Oregon and Ole Miss QB Jeremiah Masoli signed with the San Francisco 49ers.
Most people familiar with college football would tell you that Oregon’s standout cornerback in their 12-0 season was Cliff Harris. People familiar with the Oregon Ducks, however, would tell you that Talmadge Jackson was the cornerback who always guarded the top receiver of the opposing team. And with all due respect to Harris, it was Jackson’s shutdown defense that forced opposing quarterbacks to throw in Harris’ direction.
Jackson had a solid four-year career with the Ducks, finishing it off by earning All-Pac-10 honors and leading the Ducks to the back-to-back Pac-10 Championships, and the team’s first-ever 12-0 regular season and BCS National Championship appearance. He led the team in solo tackles (43) in 2010 and led the team in interceptions (4) in 2009.
Year by Year statistics:
2010: 67 tackles (43 solo), 2 INT
2009: 47 tackles (37 solo), 4 INT, 1 TD
2008: 25 tackles (17 solo), 2 INT
2007: 7 tackles (5 solo)
His best came in Oregon’s 2010 season came at the most pivotal time in the season: the team’s final game. In the Civil War against the rival Oregon State Beavers, Jackson helped shut down the Beavers’ offense with 8 tackles, a pass deflection, and an interception returned for a 52-yard gain.
Although undrafted, Jackson could be come a mainstay in Baltimore’s solid defense for a long, long time.
