Pittsburgh, PA —
Today was a busy day for the Steelers organization as they picked up un-drafted rookie free agents, including former Iowa Hawkeye defensive back Brett Greenwood. Greenwood, a 6’0″, 200 pound safety was a second team all-Big Ten selection by the league coaches and received an honorable mention by league meida. Greenwood was also a the permanent team captain on the defensive side of the Hawkeye team. Prior to his senior season at Iowa, Greenwood received honorable mention selection status as an all-American by National Champs.net and was named second team all-Big Ten by Sports illustrated. The Steelers have needs in their defensive backfield, and Greenwood may be just the kind of steal in a player the team could take advantage of in the 2011 NFL season.
Greenwood flew to Pennsylvania this morning in order to join the defending AFC champion Steelers in time for the opening of training camp Thursday in Latrobe, Pa. Greenwood’s 12 career interceptions as a Hawkeye rank sixth in the Iowa record book. Greenwood redshirted the 2006 season after walking on to the Hawkeye team, and is no stranger to success.
Greenwood attended Pleasant Valley High School in Bettendorf, Iowa. While on the Spartans team, Greenwood earned first team all-state honors as a junior and senior as a defensive back, was a first team all-conference wide receiver and defensive back as a senior, a first team all-conference defensive back and third team all-conference quarterback as a junior. Versatility and athleticism helped Greenwood set career totals of 1,076 rushing yards, 686 passing yards, 783 yards receiving, 16 rushing touchdowns, eight receiving touchdowns and four touchdown passes. Greenwood posted 13 interceptions as a free safety (six his senior year). Greenwood also holds the school record for receptions in a season with 56. Greenwood was honored his junior and senior year by being named team captain and earned three varsity letters in football and basketball, four letters in track and field, and was a member of the basketball team that reached the Iowa Class 4A state championships.
The Steelers contacted Greenwood’s agent, Jack Bechta, on Monday. “I tried to find the right fit with the right team and they seemed very interested in me,” Greenwood told reporters. “It’s a great organization to go to. They have always had a great defense.”
When asked about how he felt about playing with veteran safeties Troy Polamalu and Ryan Clark, Greenwood answered, “You can’t go wrong learning from safeties like (them). It will be a great opportunity.”
Greenwood worked out during the spring and summer months with Iowa’s strength coach Chris Doyla and various players, including 12 Hawkeye rookies and pro football veterans.
“There will be plenty of opportunities to learn,” Greenwood said. “Hopefully, I’ll go in there, prove what I can do…”
Greenwood was a marketing major at the University of Iowa and a four-year member of the prep Honor Roll. Greenwood is also the only redshirt freshman named to the 2007 Leadership Group.
