Pastor Carl Gallups of Hickory Hammock Baptist Church in Milton Florida is a former law enforcement officer with the expert credentials required to speak with experience and authority on the contrast between the horrible events in Norway and what the dynamics could have looked like if Norway had the same gun laws which have been a huge success in Florida. Read what Mr. Gallups has to say on the matter in a recent one-on-one interview this week.
- Examiner: Pastor Gallups, what are your initial thoughts on the Norwegian shooting of last week? Give us your perspective on it.
- Gallups: My deepest sympathy and prayers are with the families who have suffered such terrible loss at the hands of this raving lunatic. I only wish that the innocent people of Norway had been given a lawful opportunity to defend themselves and take the shooter out somewhere closer to the onset of the whole ordeal. More than likely, many young lives could have been spared. The Norway terrorist shooting and mayhem speaks of yet another travesty. The additional charade is that here we have another example of what happens when innocent and law-abiding citizens are not allowed to protect themselves against the criminally insane. The old cliché, “when guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have the guns,” certainly and sadly rings true in Norway.
While there is no way to know for certain how many lives could have been saved if Norwegians were allowed to lawfully carry concealed firearms, one only has to assume, based upon reason and statistical facts, that the mayhem would not have been nearly as devastating.
I live in Florida. Not only do we have concealed carry, but we have the “defend your ground” or “castle doctrine,” as well. If one is a licensed concealed carrier in Florida, one is not required to “run away” when your life is in jeopardy. You may defend yourself, with deadly force, if necessary. The anti-gun proponents were certain that when Florida went to such “wild west” laws as these — that all kind of bedlam would soon break loose. However, quite the opposite has happened. One reads, almost weekly, of somewhere in Florida where a lawful handgun carrier defended himself against a would-be assailant. Seldom, if ever, do you read of a licensed carrier going ballistic and turning their lawfully concealed weapon upon innocents. In fact, I do not know that I have ever heard of such a case in Florida.
I know this, on the day that the criminally insane Norway shooter turned his guns upon a crowd at a youth camp, I would much rather have been in a gathering such as that in Florida, than I would have in Norway. I would not have wanted to be anywhere else in the world that thinks it is “enlightened” to disarm its lawful, loyal, and tax-paying citizens.
The fact of the matter is this; the police are not required to be your personal bodyguards. You are responsible for your own personal safety and protection. It took the Norwegian authorities almost ninety minutes to respond to the slaughter. The innocents were helpless. Again, my deepest sympathy and prayers are with the families who have suffered such terrible loss at the hands of this raving lunatic.
