Former Duke Blue Devils lacrosse players, Max Quinzani and Brad Ross, helped their Major League Lacrosse (MLL) team, the Boston Cannons, beat the Hamilton Nationals 10-9, to capture the franchise’s first championship title on Sunday at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis, Maryland.
To say the 2011 Major League Lacrosse season has been a productive one for former Duke Blue Devils lacrosse stars would be an understatement.
If there has been a significant milestone or award recognized in MLL this season, a former Duke Blue Devil has been a part of it.
With the win in Annapolis, Quinzani earns his first MLL championship while Ross tallies the second of his career as his first came with the Nationals in 2009 when the team played out of Toronto.
Second-year player Ned Crotty led MLL with 50 points while starring with the Rochester Rattlers.
Fourth-year veteran Matt Danowski finished fourth overall in scoring and joined Crotty in being named to the 2011 All-MLL squad.
Clutch goals lead to championship titles
For local lacrosse fans watching MLL play this season, the memory of Quinzani scoring with 12 seconds left to play to beat the Virginia Cavaliers 14-13 in the 2010 NCAA semi-final game that put the Blue Devils in a position to eventually win their first-ever national championship came back on Saturday.
With the Boston Cannons tied with the Chesapeake Bayhawks, it was Quinzani’s third goal of the game with 1.2 seconds left to play that put the Cannons ahead 14-13, giving the franchise its second post-season victory and the chance to contend for its first-ever MLL championship.
On Sunday, Quinzani’s hard work paid off as the Cannons hoisted the Steinfeld Trophy, another first and one that he will look forward to taking back to Beantown and his hometown of Duxbury, Ma.
