To say that the 2010 season was a disaster for the Warriors would be a bit of an understatement. After finishing with an 8-3 regular season record (4-3 in PSAC East) and an appearance in the NCAA Division II playoffs, the Warriors underachieved, finishing with a 3-8 record (2-5 PSAC East). It marked the first time since 1972 that East Stroudsburg finished worse than 5th in the PSAC East.
The three wins by East Stroudsburg were as many wins as their defeated opponents (Pace, Cheyney and Millersville) combined. However, five of the Warriors’ losses last year were by a touchdown or less.
Ray Wagner takes over as quarterback after Matt Marshall’s graduation. Joining him in the backfield is junior Kendrick Williams, the team’s rusher (668 yards, nine touchdowns). Wagner will have some new receivers to look for this season, as Ed Kiser and Jeff Giglio, who combined for more than 4,000 career receiving yards, both graduated. Sophomore Dusty Reed, the second leading receiver last season (377 yards, six touchdowns) and junior Jordan Hallman are expected to be Wagner’s top targets.
On the defensive side of the ball, linebacker Matt Freed is gone, as is DB David Castillo. Two of the Warriors’ leading tacklers from last season, FS Herschel Thornton and LB Taylor Cave, anchor a core of six returning starters – all seniors. DL Rudy Cerami and CB Shawnte Carroll are also two key veterans expected to stabilize a defense ranked ninth in the PSAC last season.
The good news for East Stroudsburg is they get to open the season against Northeast 10 conference doormat Pace (0-9 last season). The bad news is the Warriors’ two cross-over games are against perennial PSAC West powers Indiana (Pa.) and California (Pa.). East Stroudsburg has a key showdown at West Chester to start league play, then have Bloomsburg and Kutztown in successive weeks.
