Florida Super Con 2011 and the Girls of Artist Alley Part 2

by jolt left

Amigurimi is the art of Japanese knitting and dollmaking and this is one talent Jenny Lee of CraftyDork has down packed! At Florida Super Con 2011 this past July 1st-4th at the Miami Mart Airport Convention Center, I was able to meet Jenny and get a good look at some of her adorable dolls.

Self taught, Jenny learned from online videos and books on crochet, applying those theories to basic shapes where she started by making hats. The influence of vidgeames and anime became a big part of her craft from her own childhood influences and a little nudge from her husband who asked for a Megaman hat be made for him. After trial an error she suceeded with no help from a pattern! All of her dolls come straight from her mind and working straight from the material to the finished product! Truly a talented individual.

Well, after the completion of her first project she posted to her blog and was met with tons of support from blogs such as Kotaku.com, spritestitch.com and even Capcom.com, her hat had recieved such a positive reception, along with tons of orders for custom hats, that Jenny then opened her website now known as Craftydork.com. Soon she expanded from hats to dolls, completing her first doll of a character from the series Fullmetal Alchemist. The doll sold within the the first day of being up on the site and she knew this was a good business venture, for now she makes dolls from tons of references such as Daft Punk, Sailormoon, Panty and Stocking, and of course Megaman. Her full-sized coll are 7 inches tall and run about $30, full customizable. She even has smaller keychain sizes which are 5 inches tall. Her skills also extends into the realm of cute animals, cupcakes and hats and whats great is you can even custom order anything through her website, so long as its made in the art of Amigurimi.

Her first convention experience was at this past Florida Supercon 2011 and her turn out was great and “it was the best experience, [she] had so much fun and met great artists and fellow crafters who were super helpful.” It’s safe to say Jenny will be attending more conventions and shows with her next appearance being at the Stitchwar Exhibit being held at the Bear and Bird Boutique Gallery, located within Tate’s Comics in Ft. Lauderdal. from August 12th-September 25th, with opening reception being August 12th from 7-10 pm, at 4566 North University Drive Lauderhill, FL 33351.
This is an exhibit any geek at heart would enjoy, and Tate’s Comics is always a fan favorite for your Girl Geek Examiner, for where else should I get the fodder for my addiction? So head out to Stitchwars this August and Support Jenny Lee and all our other geeky counterparts that will also be exhibiting that week.

Let the Geek be with you!
