Quite possibly the best selling style for men and women, and quite possibly the style where both err the most. Many of your fashionable friends will have you believe that there are too many better choices to settle for this easy style. Likewise some of your other friends can’t quite bare the sight of them, or anyone else in a pair for that matter. As with many of these debates there is a time and place for everything, and this is where we need to set our friends straight. Before you get the proper time and place to sport these summer favorites, let’s make sure you own the right pair. One of the biggest fashion faux pas we have to bear, is seeing our neighbors walking around in public with flip flops made of rubber. These rubber flip flops were intended as shower shoes, and some how we have accepted this as proper attire elsewhere. They may be inexpensive and come in every color, but if you must own them, then please match them with your towel and bath robe and keep them all together safe and sound in the confines of your own home. If you wish to wear them post-pedicure due to their flexibility, then by all means you earned your only hall pass. If you desire to wear them due to their comfort, my friend you have not discovered what a real comfortable flip flop is like, and you are flopping this style. As they say; your shoes should be as nice as your outfit. If your outfit is as nice as your $3 flip flops, then please find a better resale store. If you are one of those who cannot bear the thong in between your toes, then I urge you to break them in just as you have your favorite pair of boots, oxfords and running shoes. There is one more rule that all most obey before slipping on a nice pair of flip flops; hygiene! We understand if you don’t have the prettiest and most proportional toes, but there is no excuse for long and dirty toe nails, or dirt and dead skin on your heels. Remember that if you haven’t worn them in a while, your feet may need to be broken in again too. To get you started on your journey to find your perfect flip flop, keep these brands in mind: Reef, Rainbow, Sanuk, Flojos, Keen & Olukai. Due to the very nature of our feet it is not fair to rank these. They are just like most shoes, some run narrow, some wide, some are soft, some need more breaking in, some hold your foot in better, some flop more. But the biggest difference you will find is the height and location of the arch. The best way to fit ANY shoe is by the length AND by the location of the arch. The best way to know is to try on different styles even amongst the same brands. The length should fit “end to end” or “bumper to bumper.” If you feel your toes are too close to the end and not hanging over, then feel for the arch location. Naturally you will see most men with flip flops three sizes too big and women with two sizes too small. Unfortunately men think they are more manly with bigger feet and women think they are more feminine with smaller feet, and neither are fooling anyone. The brands mentioned earlier do come in some different materials, but you are cheating yourself out of comfort if you do not buy a good pair made of real leather. Price ranges from the $20’s to $50’s, they should last for a decade, and yes they are fine to wear to the pool or beach. Hopefully your rubber flip flops are about to find a donation bin or fall apart, and so you’ll need to know where to find these hot styles. You can find them at your outdoor sporting good stores such as REI and Dick’s. Your safe mall locations are Pacific Sunwear and Journeys. The local favorites are Whole Earth Provision Co and Tyler’s in Highland Park. If this isn’t enough to get you into a pair, maybe another two weeks of 100 degree Dallas weather will change your mind.
