Five Guys is a hamburger chain that seems to have at least one restaurant in every large city, except the Quad Cities! Hopefully this mistake will someday be corrected, but for now, to get your Five Guys fix, Peoria is your closest option. And If you are one of the unfortunates who have never HAD a Five Guys burger and fries – drive to Peoria, using any excuse you can think of, so you can try one.
Five Guys has a very simple menu – they do a few things very well, and their fans are fine with that. There are a few burger items on the menu, some hotdogs – bacon, cheese, bacon/cheese and regular – and surprisingly, some vegetarian sandwiches! Add fries and a drink, and that’s it. The decor is just as simple – a lot of white tile everywhere, with red accents, and an industrial feel. The big open kitchen, with stainless steel walls, counters and cooktops, assure you of high standards of cleanliness, and it’s fun watching your order being made. Add to this, a bunch a very friendly people, and it’s not surprising that this is one popular and crowded hamburger joint.
There are a few varieties of hamburgers you can order, but start out with the $4.99 burger – 100% fresh beef, juicy and tasty, on a warm squishy bun, with all kinds of free toppings. You can get a smaller one for less, but go for the big one first. The menu lists fries at the Regular size at $2.69, and the large at $4.99. Between the 3 diners today, one order of the regular size was more than enough! They come in two types, Five Guys Style or Cajun – haven’t tried the Cajun yet, so will have to find a reason to go to Peoria soon….
There are a lot of fans who go to Five Guys just for the french fries, and they are good, fried with the skins on, a mild seasoning on top, and they are made fresh there. By the counter will be a sign telling you which farm that day’s fries were purchased from. On this day, it was Clawson Farms in Shelby, Idaho. You can also get malt vinegar for your fries if you enjoy them that way.
And take a look at the reviews about Five Guys from around the country – they’re fun to read. There’s also several bulletin boards, with paper and crayons, for you to write your own opinion and hang up.
When your meal is over, and if you’d like to walk some of it off, stroll down to the The Fresh Market at the end of the building. It’s great fun, full of fresh produce, a huge deli and meat market, organic and gourmet foods, and more cheese than you can imagine. There’s plenty of desserts there to finish off your Five Guys adventure.
