Finding a compatible mate that shares your same core values can seem like a crap shoot — a game of chance, with impossible odds. A handsome face or a pretty smile does not reveal a person’s inner character. Gone are the days, when most youngsters stayed close to home, making it harder to find out about the family background of a potential mate. Studies show that marriages based on compatibility and shared common beliefs have a much better chance for survival.
Faith being such an integral part of the African-American experience, it may be worthwhile to consider leaving the bar scene and going to a place of worship to find a mate. In studies of the best places to meet potential mates, churches or places of worship usually rate in the top three, competing with work or universities and colleges for the top spots. While scoping a brother or sister out during ‘The Lord’s Prayer’ may not seem appropriate, places of worship often provide avenues to do community work in a non-pressured and more genuine atmosphere. They afford occasions to see a person’s work ethic and talk about things that are really important to both parties. Austin has some great places of worship for brothers and sisters of all faiths to meet like-minded singles.
At the Congregational Church of Austin, Pastor Tom Vandestadt mixes a bit of Zen into the sermons. On a recent Sunday, he led the whole congregation in a rendition of the Beatle’s “All we Need is Love” to compare the love of God to the love between a man and a woman. The serene atmosphere of the church with the lovely string-quartet in the background makes a lovely setting to find true love.
