Finale, located in Coolidge Corner, Brookline, is popular for its monthly dessert/cocktail tasting events. The most recent event was a Sorbet & Gelato tasting, where I learned about Ciao Bella Blackberry Cabernet Sorbet, a find to which me and my husband are truly appreciative.
The company (not the Newbury Street restaurant) Ciao Bella was recently featured on The Apprentice, where an interesting mix of gelato was made using every donut on-hand at Dunkin’ Donuts. It didn’t last on the marketing plan, but I’ll bet the Blood Orange Sorbet will, as it was deemed one of Oprah’s favorite flavors, which I was able to find at Whole Foods Market, along with Ciao Bella’s Blackberry Cabernet Sorbet, to which my husband has instructed me to buy every last one on the shelf next time I shop there.
Sorbet is made with 75 to 80 percent fruit, and is defined as an Italian style frozen dessert made from sweetened water flavored with fruit juice, wine or liquor, and does not contain dairy.
Gelato is also Italian, but made in the style of ice cream, with milk, cream, sugars, fruit and sometimes nut purees – no air makes it denser than usual ice cream – with a more pungent taste.
Finale paired a Peachy Keen Martini with Raspberry Frangipani Tart and Raspberry Sorbet, which was sweet, but all at the same level of delicious sweetness. Oh, did I mention there should be no seeds in a sorbet? And that gelato by Ciao Bella is gluten-free, corn syrup free, all natural, kosher friendly and has no artificial hormones?
Next, a Passion Fruit Mojito paired with a Lemon Tart (made with lemon curd that is similar to Crème Brule – smooth, but not creamy — velvety) and Lemon Sorbet. This was an easy tasting, as all tastes were on the same level of lemony flavor.
Tiramisu Martini is a good after dinner drink, paired with a Tiramisu Mousse Cup and Coffee Gelato with a roasted coffee bean on top.
Next, the Mango Tango Cocktail paired with an Apple Cranberry Tart and Lebanese Yogurt Gelato. This was a tart pairing and the mango cocktail had mango sorbet in the mix. The Apple Cranberry Tart balanced out the flavors.
And then, finally, we tasted the Blackberry Cabernet Sorbet with a Blackberry Cabernet Margarita and Manjari Mousse Cup. The next time I was at Whole Foods, I bought a pint of Blackberry Cabernet and it was gone within two days. Although my husband would prefer I keep this find to myself so that we can purchase more pints without fear of it being sold out – I feel the need to share this delectable find – but am looking forward to trying the Blood Orange Sorbet as well. After all, if Oprah has endorsed it, it must be to die for, right?
Wanna try some?
The next Finale tasting event will be a “Summer Drinks Tasting” on Tuesday, July 26, at Finale’s Coolidge Corner location from 6:30 – 8pm.
