The FBi is offering a reward of $1000 for information leading to the capture of the person or persons who left an incendiary device outside a women’s reproductive center in Detroit last month. FBI spokeswoman Sandra Berchtold said Wednesday that part of the facility was scorched by fire and a window broken by the device.
The target of the device was the Summit Women’s Center located at 15801 West McNichols Rd. While the center does perform abortions, it also provides gynecological services, STD testing, and birth control option counseling.
The FBI said an incendiary package was left outside the clinic between 1:30 PM Saturday, July 16 but before 8:30 AM Monday, July 18, when employees discovered the damage.
The FBI declined to discuss the content of the package, but a security employee at the clinic said it was a Molotov cocktail. That employee also stated that the clinic remained open while the burn damage was remediated.
FBI Special Agent in Charge Andrew Arena said placement of the device may be a violation of the Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances (FACE) Act, making it a federal crime to injure, intimidate, or interfere with those seeking to provide or obtain reproductive health services.
Now the FBI is seeking help from the public in catching the person or persons responsible for the device, offering the $1000 reward.
Anyone having information that could result in the apprehension of the perpetrators may call Crime Stoppers, (800) SPEAK UP, or the FBI Detroit Office at (313) 965-4526.
