The first night of the 2011 NFL preseason has come and gone and it is time to see how your favorite players did as you head into the 2011 NFL Fantasy Football Draft.
Denver Broncos vs. Dallas Cowboys
The Dallas Cowboys opened the NFL preseason with a win over the Denver Broncos, 24-23. All eyes were on the quarterback situation in Denver between Kyle Orton and Tim Tebow. Kyle Orton started the game, completed 2-of-6 passes for 37 yards. Tim Tebow then came in and led the Broncos on four drives, completing 6-of-7 passes for 91 yards. However, it was Brady Quinn who played the better game as the third string quarterback, going 8-for-14 for 132 yards with a touchdown. Jeremiah Johnson ran for a touchdown on 28 yards while Eron Riley caught a touchdown pass with three receptions for 43 yards.
Tony Romo also made his comeback for the Dallas Cowboys after missing most of 2010 with injury. Romo played a fair game after starting, going 3-5 for 33 yards. Backup Jon Kitna came in and matched Romo, going 3-4 for 23 yards. Then Stephen McGee, fighting for a spot as the third stringer went 14-24 for 208 yards, three touchdowns and an interception. It was McGee that led Dallas down for the win and might be fighting for the No. 2 spot in the rotation. McGee also led the team in rushing with 25 yards. Felix Jones ran for 23 yards and neither Tashard Choice nor DeMarco Murray had any offensive stats. A wide receiver turning heads was Dwayne Harris, the Cowboys fifth round pick from East Carolina. Harris caught five receptions for 127 yards and two touchdowns.
Philadelphia Eagles vs. Baltimore Ravens
People are comparing the Philadelphia Eagles to the Miami Heat and in their first preseason game, they beat the Baltimore Ravens, 13-6. Michael Vick continued to make his case to be the No. 1 quarterback in fantasy football in 2011. He went 4-6 for 74 yards and a touchdown pass to tight end Brent Celek, making owners of the tight end happy after he fell off in 2010. It was the only touchdown of the game. Dion Lewis led the Eagles in rushing with 26 yards while Ronnie Brown ran for 22. Chad Hall led Philadelphia with five receptions for 82 yards.
Joe Flacco went 3-6 but threw for 60 yards, a promising showing proving Flacco is willing to go downfield more this year. Tyrod Taylor, the Raven rookie quarterback, threw for 179 yards but threw two interceptions. He also led the team with 59 rushing yards.
Jacksonville Jaguars vs. New England Patriots
With David Garrard injured, rookie quarterback Blaine Gabbert got his chance to prove he belongs in the Jacksonville starting lineup. His debut was average, completing 9-16 for 85 yards. However, the New England Patriots came out on fire and took out Jacksonville 47-12. Tom Brady and Chad Ochocinco came out and made an appearance but neither man played in this game. Instead, all the Patriots fireworks were by people you might never see in the regular season. Brian Hoyer (15/21, 171 yds, 1 TD) and Ryan Mallett (12/19, 164 yards, 1 TD) were the quarterbacks. Stevan Ridley (64 yds, 2 TD) and Richard Medlin (54 yds, 2 TD) were the running backs. Taylor Price (5/105 yds, 1 TD) and Stevan Ridley (7/47 yds, 1 TD) and Aaron Hernandez (6/68 yds) led in receiving. Expect Stevan Ridley to get more playing time if he continues to play like this (111 yards and 3 TDs).
Seattle Seahawks vs. San Diego Chargers
Vincent Jackson is back and in the Chargers good graces, leading the team with 2 receptions for 54 yards while Philip Rivers went 5/6 for 87 yards and a touchdown. However, San Diego lost to Seattle 24-17 in their preseason opener. Many people are questioning Seattle’s choice to make Tavaris Jackson the starter with no competition but it was backup Charlie Whitehurst who impressed in this game, completing 14/20 for 115 yards. Jackson finished with 3/5 for 13 yards. Thomas Clayton (62 yds, 1 TD) and Leon Washington (23 yds, 1 TD) both scored on the ground while Anthony McCoy caught a TD pass from third stringer Josh Portis.
Arizona Cardinals vs. Oakland Raiders
Kevin Kolb started for Arizona and went 4/7 for 68 yards and Beanie Wells ran for 22 yards in the first half. Larry Fitzgerald also benefited from Kolb starting at quarterback, catching two receptions for 60 yards. Jason Campbell went 6/9 for 66 yards while Michael Bush ran for 16 yards for Oakland.
